What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
Many fantasy epics deal with the buildup or course of an epic conflict. However, what doesn't get covered often is the aftermath – the changes on every level of society that result from that war. To me, that aftermath seemed at least as interesting as the epic conflict itself.
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
I wished to show a cross section of imperial society after the Great War.
Tia is from the upper middle class, looking to marry into the aristocracy. She is intelligent, educated, and knows the value of making a good first impression. She associates with court officials and other women of comparable status.
Rebecca, Tia's maid and personal minstrel, hails from the bottom strata of the Empire. She sees Tia as her ticket to a secure future.
Sir Peter Cortez is bastard born knight, one of many near penniless heroes of the Traag War, a man who seeks to find a place in a changed society.
Kyle is a former serf who was drafted into the legions, then trained in magic. That combination put him in the wars most horrific battles and left him a traumatized drunken wreck.
