The Essence of Nathan Biddle by J. William Lewis

The Essence of Nathan Biddle by J. William Lewis

Protagonist Kit Biddle is a rising prep school senior who finds himself tangled in a web of spiritual quandaries and intellectual absurdities. Kit’s angst is compounded by a unique psychological burden he is forced to carry: his intelligent but unstable Uncle Nat has committed an unspeakable act on what, according to the Uncle’s deranged account, were direct orders from God.

An intelligent, clever, and captivating tale, The Essence of Nathan Biddle soars in the spaces that exist between despair and hope, darkness and light, love and loss. Beautifully written, profoundly moving, and resplendent with characters destined to remain with you long after the last page is turned, The Essence of Nathan Biddle is unforgettable.

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
When my children were small, we spent two weeks at a beach resort we deemed sufficiently safe for them to run wild and free. (Each of our daughters took a friend, a scheme that relieved us of having to entertain them.) On a whim one summer, I decided to reread The Catcher in the Rye just for fun. I enjoyed it, particularly the aspect of it that struck a familiar chord with my own adolescence. I was also struck by the missing chords, the struggles with why and the exasperating efforts to accommodate the whims, desires and “programs” of people around me. That summer I began to sort in my mind the practical and existential issues that plagued me. My assumptions were that I was a fairly typical teenager and that, to the extent I was not typical, it might make the story more pointed. The object was to write about the angst that begins as a ripple in the early teens and becomes a tsunami as the adolescent approaches adulthood.

How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
In thoughts, emotions and physical description, Kit Biddle is based on me. In almost every other sense, Kit Biddle is a fictional character: I am not an only child and my mother was not a school teacher; my father committed suicide but it was after I was grown. (The description of the death of Kit’s father is actually based on the death of my grandfather, George Robert Lewis, at his farmhouse in Escatawpa, Alabama.) Like Kit, my family arrived on this continent in the 17th century (Thomas Lewis died in Isle of Wight County, Virginia, in 1672), and the family has been drawn back to Virginia. Three members of my family are UVA graduates and my grandson is now a rising junior at UVA. Since the heart of a coming-of-age story is the process of coming to terms with life as it is, not as one might wish it were, the themes should resonate. If Kit as a character resonates, I hope that means that I have come close to the truth.

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
As an avid book-reader, I often find myself gravitating to the children’s book section in our local library/bookstore. While browsing through the books, I noticed there weren’t many with clear, character-building lessons behind them.

The question came to mind…”What would I want my children to read one day?”

That’s when I decided I wanted my writing to be fun for children and teach important life lessons and character qualities. The discussion questions included at the end of each chapter help enforce these lessons and provide an opportunity for parents to further expand upon them.

One of my favorite things about this book; all the canine characters are inspired by real dogs, which our doggies have been a special part of my life and family over the years.

How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
Since I love dogs so much and treat them as part of our family, I decided to incorporate them and other animal characters into making the book fun and interesting for children. Most kids I know sure love all kinds of animal characters in the books they read.

Excerpt From: Wait for the Turtle

“Charity! Wait up!”

I slid to a stop and turned to see my best friend running to catch up, her long ears flying behind her. “Hurry up, Sadie! He’s getting away!”

‘He’ was Mr. Ribbit-Hopper, a bright green frog who lived in the pond behind the castle. Sadie and I enjoyed chasing him anytime he wandered from his lily pad home. So far, he always managed to out hop us…but we weren’t giving up.
“Where’d he go?” Sadie asked, panting as she skidded to a stop beside me.
I pointed to the bushes in front of us. “I saw him go in there.”
“Shhh!” Sadie said. “Maybe we can sneak up on him.”

I crouched low to the ground and began to crawl underneath the bushes with Sadie right behind me, both of us trying to be as silent as possible. I’m not sure we succeeded, though. The prickly edges of the branches kept getting caught in my fur and made a rustling sound when I pushed them away. I was glad when we crawled out on the other side of the bushes.
“There he is,” I said to Sadie in a whisper. “Where? I don’t see him.”
“Right there.” I pointed to a big rock where Mr. Ribbit-Hopper sat with his back to us.
“Oh,” Sadie said. “I see him now. Do you think he knows we’re here?”
I shrugged my shoulders. “I don’t know, but I hope not.”
“Well, what are we waiting for?” Sadie asked. “Let’s go catch us a frog.”

Carefully, we snuck closer and closer to the rock. I smirked. Mr. Ribbit-Hopper didn’t seem to know we were there. When we were close enough, I held up a paw and counted to three in a whisper.
“1…2…3, go!”
As soon as I said go, we pounced.

However, in our excitement of possibly catching Mr. Ribbit-Hopper, neither of us noticed how close the rock was to the pond. I was slightly in front of Sadie, so this was a fact I realized first.

“Wait, Sadie! Stop!”
But it was too late.

Being a basset hound, Sadie was much longer and heavier than I was, and the rock was much too small to hold both of us. As her front paws landed on the rock, one of her long ears ended up underneath those paws throwing her off balance and causing her to bump into me. Both of us went tumbling into the pond with a loud SPLASH!
