What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I started writing The Fire Within My Heart as a short story when I was on break at work as a creative outlet as I was working in the arts, around so many artists and creatives, and yet not able to do any of my own. These people inspired me and brought out that flare in me I felt I'd lost many years prior. Eventually, it blossomed into a full-fledged novel to which I devoted endless hours, many moons, and so much emotion. Without the weird and wonderful creatives of a particular festival at which I worked, though, it never would have become what it is.
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
This is a hard one! Honestly, they just came to me, the way some characters just do. Once I started writing about them, they just began to flow onto paper and became people within their own right who knew their passions, what they love, and hate, and their history. Sometimes, they take a while to reveal themselves to me (those pesky supernaturals can be quite elusive!) but eventually, they share all!

It was at that moment I knew I was seconds away from death. Any release from the pain in my body would be welcome. I thought of my mother, father, friends…of what they would think tomorrow when I hadn't returned home. Who would find my body? What would they do with me? I didn't care, I just needed to be free from the agony.
Death was welcome.

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I was attending the funeral of my aunt in South Carolina on a hot July day. While wiping sweat from my brow, a voice in my head said, "This is where the story begins." The book did not start on that particular day, but the compulsion to start did. Words began to appear on the page a few months later while I was on a trip to the North Carolina mountains.
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
Some of my characters are based on real people from my life, especially my father and paternal grandmother. The main character is named for my grandmother. The villain strangely is based on a former minister. Others are amalgams of people I have known. Some just appeared.

Prologue
A red-tailed hawk rose on the currents of the afternoon thermals, gliding round and around the crown of the weather-beaten pine before resting upon an outstretched branch. From his perch, the bird looked out upon the vista that stretched before his keen eyes. Below him a rustle in the grass turned his attention from the heavens to the earth. A small cottontail emerged from its hiding and nibbled at wildflowers on the edge of the cliff. Before the hawk could muster its instincts to respond, another motion entered the scene just below the rabbit. The head of an Eastern diamondback rattlesnake emerged over the rim of the ravine and flattened out as it wound its way closer to its prey. The rabbit saw nothing and knew nothing until a flash, the sensation of warm fluid oozing into its cranium, and the stiffening of limbs and darkening of senses. The snake coiled in bliss around the twitching final pulsations of the ball of fur and fluids.
Its revelry, however, was short-lived. In another flash, a convulsion of pain interrupted the snake’s pleasures as piercing talons penetrated its flesh and lifted it skyward. Soon, the hawk sat upon his perch once again and tore the eyes from the stilled serpent. Had the bird cared to notice, at that moment a man descended from the peaks above and another wound his way up the rugged escarpment below. The blood lettings of men were about to play out again beneath the watchful eyes of the bird, but hawks are creatures of the air and take no notice of the affairs of men. That he would leave to the one who made them. Slowly, the raptor lifted and again rode the warm afternoon breezes, oblivious to all hungers but its own.

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
The Saturday matinee serials of childhood, where the end of each episode finishes on an unresolved question or cliffhanger, my favourite Hitchcock films, The 39 Steps and North by North West. Pure escapism, adventure and thrills which I wanted to capture in prose. Also I wanted to include humor, I think this can work well with drama – it provides some light relief. I didn't want to write something too dark.
Also my Mum was a great fan of Alastair Maclean and my Dad loved a good laugh, so I thought I'd write something that they could have both read and enjoyed.
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
Some of the characters are the classic tropes, the jaded detective on the verge of retirement, secret agents, covert agencies and the antagonist intent on world domination. All standard "ingredients" but like all recipes its how they're combined. Into I threw the main protagonist, John Cranston, a gardener. Its about as far as I could get from ex cop/commando etc, so when introduced (unwillingly) into a parallel shady world, that's when the adventures start.

They raced down the stairs and on the lower floor the Ninja peeked around the exit and raised his clenched fist above his shoulder, indicating they should halt. John noticed he didn’t say much, which he put down to the pillowcase being wrapped too tightly around his head. The Ninja continued to sign, not wanting to make a sound in case he revealed their position. He pointed to his eyes and then outside. He executed a small mime with his fingers walking around, followed by a circle scribed in the air with his index finger.
‘It’s a film, four words, first syllable,’ John guessed.
The Ninja silently slapped his head with the heel of his palm, looked heavenward, counted to five, and then suddenly burst through the door.

Author Bio:
Bexhill-on-Sea writer David C Mason is the author of the new novel Pandora's Gardener, an adventure thriller with added humour.
Originally from London's East End he "escaped" to the seaside to see out his last years of climbing the corporate greased pole, before giving up to do something more interesting.
After thirty odd years of writing plans, outlines, proposals, strategies, business cases, most of which could have passed as works of fiction (or "scenarios" as they were known), he is no stranger to making things up.
He thought it would be a shame to let all that experience go to waste.
When he's not writing, thinking about writing, or out with his camera, he can sometimes be found telling people that "no, Bexhill-on-Sea is nothing to do with Southend-on-Sea…"
