NOW IN ENGLISH! Very special launch price, JUST $2.99 for a few days!
#1 bestseller in Spain, Mexico and the United States (Spanish Version) – #1 bestseller historical thriller and mystery series in Spain for more than a year – More than 600.000 readers
“The Twelve Doors is the best saga of thrillers I have read in ten years. With simple language that manages to keep you in suspense until the last line. You finish a chapter and you need to read the next one. Vicente Raga it’s a real find.” Harald Brook, Tribuna Libre.
“Sell more than Ken Follet last Christmas in Spain is far from the reach of many. In my house, there isn’t one that hasn’t read it, even my three sons. Dynamic narrative and a documented novel. Very recommendable.” Roberto Marín, Florida Books.
Do you want to enter the universe of The Twelve Doors? Think about it, because once you enter, it will be difficult to turn around… Two stories are narrated in parallel. The first one is in The Jewish quarter of Valencia, Spain, where some kids stumble upon a secret society that still exists nowadays. All the characters existed in their time period and every narrated fact occurred in reality. The second story stars a group of friends, led by the charismatic and mysterious historian Rebecca Mercader, the main character, that must solve a centennial mystery.
The reader changes the story every 4-5 pages. Different characters and tales are separated from each other by more than six hundred years. It looks like two novels in one. The reader starts asking himself, why this? Why am I reading two stories that have no connections? The simple answer, my friend, is that you will figure it out if you keep reading, after all. Maybe they have more connections than you think and nothing is what it seems.
Mystery, thriller and real history, a cocktail that makes the universe of The Twelve Doors a novel series that is entertaining and easy to read, that WON’T ALLOW YOU TO PUT THE BOOK DOWN, but at the same time, based on real facts.

Questions he must answer before reaching for that coveted prize, an appointment to West Point.

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
The beginning of the 1st book in the series came in a dream and an article in Time magazine. Heroes today are few. And we need more of them. This book is a continuation of that theme. This is an early years book where the main character enlists in the Army with a dream of going to West Point. It was even fact-checked by a graduate of the actual class of the character.
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
My characters come from many places. My friends, people I admire, people I despise. Some are a mixture of traits I would like to see in others and myself. And my character took on traits of my friend who graduated from West Point.

December 8, 1951
USMC Camp Pendleton, California
Jackson entered their house with a copy of his enlistment papers. He had just left the US Army recruiter’s office in Oceanside. Since he was only seventeen, he hoped his mother would sign the permission form. But why wouldn’t she? He’d worked his butt off to graduate a year early from high school for this purpose. She knew his plans, his dreams of going to West Point. This was the first stepping stone, enlisting during a time of war.
“Mom, I’m home,” Jackson yelled in the entry hall.
“I’m in the kitchen, honey,” his mother called.
Jackson went into the kitchen and watched his mother at the stove. He sniffed the air. She was cooking one of his favorite meals, pot roast with carrots, onions, and potatoes with green beans and corn. On the table, three place settings instead of two. Him, his mother…and maybe his older brother, Jim, in his first year at the Naval Academy.
“When’s Jim getting home for winter break?”
His mother checked her watch. “Ten minutes. He called this morning to say his train would be late.”
“Yeah, heard on the radio there were snowstorms in Maryland.”
“Now…” His mother turned around. “Where have you been?”
Jackson held out the permission form. “Recruiter’s office. Will you sign this for me, please?”
“Hmmm…so you went without me.”
“Yes, ma’am. I wanted to get it done.” He didn’t want his mother going with him. No way did he want the recruiter thinking he was a mama’s boy.
Mom took the paper and looked at it. Her expression didn’t change. She wasn’t happy with him. “So you chose infantry as a primary MOS? With the option to attend Airborne School?”
“Yes, I want to jump out of planes.”
She tapped her finger on her lips. “Like your dad. James loves it too. I don’t know, JJ, you just turned seventeen yesterday. Don’t you want to wait and enjoy yourself for a few months? Be home for Christmas with your brother. You’ve done nothing but study and train at the gym.”
Jackson wasn’t sure she would sign it. “Mom…”
His mother’s expression didn’t change then she smiled. “Hand me a pen.”
“Thanks.” Jackson rummaged around in the kitchen junk drawer until he found a pen and gave it to her.
“When would you have to report for basic training?”
“The train leaves for Fort Benning on Tuesday…December 12th. I start basic on the 18th.”
Before his mother could respond, someone knocked on the door.
“Wonder who that could be?” she said.

Sweet As Murder by Patricia M Muhammad |
|

Wilhemina is a coloured detective in 1950s Atlanta, Georgia. She is married to Charles, an Anglo-Brit. Lieutenant Carmichael sends her and Detective Arthur Dobson undercover at the Society’s annual baking competition to investigate a murder committed during the preliminaries. There is more at stake for than a blue ribbon prize. Wilhemina presents herself as a baker. Arthur is a judge. Dorothy is an associate of the Society and a contestant. She uses allegations of Communism to progress her way through the competition until she realizes that she has been socially disposed of by the Society. Dankworth notices that the baker Marceline plays with ‘light’. A vagrant outside the Society’s building is stabbed. He is more important than most would think. One baker is poisoned the first day of the competition. Another dies after engaging in a fight with a competitor. Wilhemina learns of this light and is able to communicate with Charles while he is at work. She realizes that the method of death in her cases is atypical. The detectives seem to be no closer to solving the case, until the winner of the competition is announced.

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
After writing my first mystery/detective novel, The Speakeasy Murders, I decided that if I were to continue in this genre, I would choose a different time period. The Speakeasy Murders is set in the 1920s. My second standalone mystery/detective novel, Murder By Dissent, is set in the 1960s. The 1950s was the following era that I inclined to. The time period where women were expected to be solely dutiful housewives was the backdrop I wanted to juxtaposed to a 'coloured' female detective married to an Anglo-Brit. In this novel, the female detective has to interact in a setting she is not accustomed to: 1) Wilhemina Dankworth is no baker. She is a working woman who, other than not really being a cook, cares for her husband and their home; 2) She is the only female detective at the local station house. To place her in a setting where she must experience the idle tongues of women who seek to defeat their competitors by nefarious means is quite foreign to her socialization and the way she carries herself. In spite of this, she realizes that the competition has more at stake than the blue ribbon prize. I wanted to add another detour in her (and the readers' ) attempt to solve the murders–a bit of magical realism.

How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
I tend to write characters of multi-racial backgrounds and/or in interracial relationships. This third mystery/detective novel was no different. As for the form, I think Wilhemina Dankworth and her husband Charles display more and more of their personalities as the plot develops. Both are inter-related and to some extent interdependent.

“Ladies!” Dankworth said. She heard some 'ooos' and 'umphs'. “Has anyone considered that we may be able to leave from the stage? Who knows about this place the most?” Another woman about the same age as Dorothy stepped forward as Wilhemina stood beside Natalie, hoping to prevent her verbal exchange from escalating further. Natalie closed her eyes briefly to compose herself. None had expected such a turn in the first day of the baking competition. Natalie still could not explain why she decided to go near the corpse. Perhaps it was the first time she had been near death before. Dorothy and Eudora were of a different sort, impervious to most human suffering, but Dorothy was the worst of the bunch. Natalie thought Dankworth's offer a palatable escape, even if momentarily, from the others. She anxiously waited to accompany Wilhemina.
“Yes, I know about this building. The stage is rarely used by the Society, but sometimes they rent this hall to others who wish to do community plays.” The woman scratched her tilted head with a curled finger as Dankworth's eyes darted from side to side, wondering if she had anything useful to share. Death affected her more than she had expected as well. “As a matter of fact—”
“Well what is it?” Eudora said. The woman ignored her urging. She remembered an exit but not quite where it was. There was too much pressure being placed on her.
“Let the woman think!” said another. Several moments passed. Marceline still stood at the main door. She slowly turned it to her left, but could not get the knob to move fully in that direction like before. Marceline thought to step away, but she couldn't. She tried to remove her hand, but was unable to. Dankworth's guide was stuck more than the others. She swallowed. Marceline then looked down. No one was telling her anything. No one spoke before in words that she could understand. Not one woman in that auditorium could empathize with what she was dealing with. She did not wish to make a scene. Marceline relaxed her hand. It was of no use. For now, she and the door were becoming one.
“Get out while you can!” Arnold mumbled in his sleep. This time there was no nurse present. Dr. Tate heeded his patient's suggestion with the necessary respect it deserved. Yet he was not to check Arnold's current status for hours. Arnold tossed himself in the opposite direction and now faced the door. His eyes were heavily shut. He wondered if he was sleeping. Whatever state that he was in, Arnold could see the young woman clearly. Her skin was of mildly steeped tea, her hair a dark black and her eyes of a deep brown hue. For him to describe the young woman to anyone would not be sufficient detail. Yet, Dr. Tate could see what Arnold saw, even if he hadn't right then in his patient's hospital room at the time of his request.
“Stacey, hold any calls, except emergencies,” Dr. Tate said. Before she could answer, he hung up the receiver of his all black phone and flicked the fingers of his right hand outward. He stared down at the small stack of patient papers settled in the middle of his desk. The words appeared jumbled as he recalled what Arnold instructed. Francis looked at his ring. Arnold did know who he was, not by familiar acquaintance, but by a certain structure that they were never to speak candidly about. He finally looked up from his desk and grabbed his pen. He tapped the center of the papers again. Dr. Tate then looked to the wall to the right of his office. He stared at his framed degrees and certifications. He did earn the right to be called doctor. Francis was among the most qualified of his class. Yet this was not enough for him. He sought a greater door, and when he called for it, it swung wide open beckoning him to enter. Francis made haste. He did ponder the long-term. For so long he had not been impacted. Arnold's request seemed not as great a task considering all of the other stories he was not supposed to hear. Dr. Tate now only had to figure out whom he was to protect. There were plenty of young women, even intelligent ones at the baking competition. Arnold had now assigned him effectually as a guardian to a complete stranger. Francis wondered how he would effectuate protecting his charge, especially with all of his professional responsibilities. How would he explain his presence? He had to be sure not to make a mistake. The door to his future, in every form could be closed to him forever.
