An intersex sweet romance
A woman with the complete form of Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome might never discover that she has testes in her abdomen rather than ovaries and uterus. Danièle knows, and she grieves that she can never have children. She has a partial form of AIS that left her with ambiguous genitals, a steady stream of doctors and psychologists, and parents determined to see her happy as a girl.
Melanie’s life has sucked ever since her best friend and childhood crush left town. But now, after five eternal years without even a text message, Danièle’s back, a proper young lady, with a fiancé and all.
“Will you act as a surrogate for Ethan and me?” her one-time friend asks.
“Well, yeah.” Long ago Melanie said she would. And she keeps her promises. Even if Danièle doesn’t.
Danièle’s in town for the surgery she needs to have vaginal intercourse with Ethan. Melanie starts her IVF cycle in preparation for carrying Ethan’s child. At the last minute, the clinic tells Danièle they can extract immature sperm from her gonadal biopsies. So Danièle agrees to become the biological father herself. She’ll tell Ethan. And Melanie. Someday.
Ethan adores the graceful young woman named Danièle, while Melanie imagines a life with the father of her child. Danièle? She’s happy with her intersex body—somewhere between princess and little boy. But in a black and white world, she must choose—once and for all—who she will be. And whom she will love.

About the Author
Lianne Simon was born into a loving family that encouraged curiosity and imagination. She learned well to read good books and to cherish her dreams.
Due to genetic mosaicism, Lianne was so tiny and frail that her parents feared losing her. She was always the smallest of her peers and had a cute pixie face. Spatial deficits kept her from learning dance or sports. She was happy, though, with her dolls and tea sets. And playing house with the other girls.
Lianne’s parents waited patiently for their son to start behaving like a boy. In fifth grade, she was finally taller than one of her classmates. Her health improved, so they nudged her toward more masculine behavior. Instead, Lianne fell in love with a boy and dreamed of being a wife and mother.
Puberty came and went, but left little evidence behind. At twenty-two, Lianne had the sex development of a ten-year-old boy. Her gonads, a dysgenetic mix of ovary and testis, failed. Fair of face and feminine of demeanor, Lianne had grown to like her faie body. Testosterone would only ruin things for her. When the doctor told her people would accept her as a girl, Lianne went on estrogen and convinced her mother to change her legal status to female.
Today, Lianne is happily married to a man who doesn’t care that she’s intersex. Or what other people may think. The couple live in a small town outside of Nashville, Tennessee. In a house ruled by a cat.
