We were used to tigers prowling the woods and cobras in the markets in Calcutta; I should have been expecting the knife England had hidden under its cloak, because England turned out to be far more exciting than I imaged when I met it headlong, what with Beowulf and my three cousins and Colin the Viscount.

And when things took a turn for the worse and someone was murdered, it became downright scary, because only I knew that a bit of India had come with us, a bit of India that looked like a drop of the sunlight that rains down on a summer’s day.

We called it Kali’s Eye.
