I will never forget the word “Commodities.” My father would go to the county’s food-distribution site to pick up our family’s share of government commodities. That’s what it was called when I was in elementary school. It was not called food stamps. You could not hide your poverty back then, and it was out there for everyone to see. You had to stand in line to claim your portions of food. 

Sometimes, the line was so long that it would curve around the corner of the block. It was a reminder that you could not even feed your loved ones without the help of the government. It was embarrassing and humiliating for most people to stand in that line. 

The only consolation was that almost every family in town was in the same line as your family member. Even though most families received assistance, the children would make jokes and tease each other about eating commodity cheese. Once each month, my father went to pick up various items: sugar, powered milk, flour, butter, canned meat, and yes, commodity cheese. Almost every family in Arkansas received some assistance from the government in the 1950′s.

The Adult is an interesting and easy read that can be done in one sitting by the average reader. The Adult is the last book in the series of three. Thankful returns home from Germany. He settles in Detroit, gets married, starts a family and buys their first house. He goes to work in the automotive industry, learns to program computers, enters the corporate world and becomes a successful real estate investor.

What I like about this book is the opportunity to travel with the imagery throughout the geographical areas as well as the thought patterns and decisions of the characters and see how they lead to an economically successful life.

“A Bulawayo Wedding,” published in 6 Tales. An expensive wedding of a Jewish couple takes place in an era of British Colonial racial discrimination where African servants of the bride and groom are barred from attending the reception after the marriage ceremony. The father of the bride needs help to pay for the event.

“Like Ripening Fruit,” published in Pens on Fire. Josh and Simon face hunger in Southern Rhodesia. Simon leads a group of violent men to obtain food. He is arrested and jailed. After his jail term is completed, Simon trains in Northern Rhodesia as a resistance fighter and returns to Southern Rhodesia to participate in events that lead to independence for Zimbabwe. In their old age, Josh and Simon retire to their village where the sangoma, the witch doctor, predicts Zimbabwe’s future.

“School Bus Driver,” published in Pens on Fire. A single mother trains to be a bus driver. After much training, she passes a driving test but has difficulties in maintaining her employment.

“A Gift From Hans,” published in Larks Fiction Magazine. Manny, a school bus driver and Joe, a student, are apartment neighbors in California. Joe asks Manny to allow Joe to read his daily newspaper before Manny takes it in the morning. Manny does not comply and Joe takes action.

“Lost in San Francisco,” published in Gravel Literary Journal. A teacher can’t find his car in San Francisco. He reports a “stolen vehicle” to the police department and is shocked to discover the car’s location.
