Starlight in the Dawn (85,000 words) is the story of a princess who was also the chief priestess in the city of Ur, in the Sumerian region of the Akkadian empire. She was the daughter of Sargon the Great, the founder of the empire. The story is based on facts accounted for by herself as well as her own literary works. She is acknowledged as the first recorded literary person in world history and her hymns were taught in schools for centuries to come.
Priestess Enehduanna is full of contrast. She is highly talented but is a lonely self; she is devout and submissive to gods but can resist and stand the ground before any mortal. The story begins with the mayor of Ur attempting to evict a potter to annex the site for his own possession. She is advised by Atrahasis, a senior citizen of the Ur and her father’s friend about what is at stake and how even a priestess has got to descend to the mundane world to guard the devotees. She foils the attempt of the mayor and protects the family, especially the potter’s niece, whom the mayor wants to enslave. This is her first step away from the seclusion of her priesthood to protect the devotees.
Next, king Lualanne of Uruk sets out to usurp the temples of Uruk and Ur. Intimidated when alone, the priestess disgraces the king. The event has its consequences.
