Here's my take on the Kindle Unlimited situation:
*My* recommendations for authors in the current "scary" KU environment. Disclaimer: I don't know if the author that had their account closed did what I am recommending or not. For those not aware an author had their KDP account closed due to manipulating the number of page reads for their books. The increase was extremely high. Amazon has since restored access to their account.
First thing to do is publish print versions of your books. ASAP. CreateSpace is free ($10 if you want to be listed as your own publisher.)
If your whole catalog on Amazon is only eBooks, then that might be a tip off to Amazon that you might not be legit. Print versions are not hard to create and give you more credibility whether you sell many or not. Plus if your Kindle versions are suspended for some reason you will still have a book listing page and a book to sell.
Many successful authors will stand with me on this next one: Build your mailing list. Build your mailing list. Build YOUR mailing list. All the advertising you do anywhere is mostly wasted if all you do is try for instant downloads and sales. Your book copyright page should have the call to action to get people to your mailing list landing page. I'm not going to harp on the need for a website, but just be sure you have a mailing list landing page at the very least, your email list provider usually has a landing page where people can subscribe even if you don't have a website. Anything in an eBook Look Inside the Book is a hot link. It is clickable. People can join your mailing list from the Look Inside the Book if they want to.
Then if Amazon does pull your plug, while you figure it out, you have a way to reach your readers and let them know where your books are still for sale.
If you go wide, use promo sites (like ours) that don't restrict you to only posting Amazon links or eBook links. Start asking the sites you advertise on to let you post your book links where ever your books are for sale. While a lot of our readers are on Amazon, maybe that is because we trained them to be? I only have one site that only allows Amazon links, since it is aimed at Kindle Unlimited borrowers. The rest of the sites in the BookGoodies Network allow you to post whatever link you want. Most of our *ads* only allow for one link - that is to focus the efforts of the ad. However all of our sites have a way to submit a full post about your books with links to where ever they are for sale and links to whatever format they are for sale.
I'm sure things will settle down and as long as you aren't a scammer cranking out garbage and trying to game the Kindle reads system you will be just fine.
Have a great and calm weekend!
