Spring Cleanup
Spring is a great time to take a look at the following before you book your next promotion. Refresh your book marketing now.
1. Your Cover.
Look at your book cover. Seriously look at it. And then look at it in thumbnail size. And on the Amazon search page. Does it stand out in a search for books in your genre? Can it be better? Your cover is the first thing people see when looking at book promotion sites, Amazon or other bookseller search results and is the most important piece of marketing that gets people to click for more information. Make sure it fits your genre and is the best representation of your book that it can be.
Successful authors evaluate and periodically freshen up their book covers to make them more appealing.
2. Your Blurb.
The book blurb on Amazon or whatever bookseller you are using is the second most important sales tool you have. After someone takes the time to click on the cover that was in the ad or search results you need to hook them with a blurb that brings them into your book and makes them click the buy button or the Look Inside the Book. Look at book blurbs in your genre for successful books. Look at book blurbs that entice you to Look Inside or go straight to the buy button and figure out what made you
interested.
3. Look Inside the Book
Some folks will go ahead and click buy once they read the blurb but according to a survey we conducted a large percentage of people click to read the book sample before they buy. The book sample is more important than reviews in converting shoppers to readers. Make sure your opening chapter is power packed and representative of the quality of writing in the rest of the book. And don't waste a lot of that valuable book sample with an overabundance of "front matter". Bump some of
that stuff to the back of the book so readers can get their teeth into the story and click the buy button. Please be sure the book sample isn't riddled with typos. If you didn't get your book professionally edited, at least have a friend read it and give you feedback. Even the best authors have typos but not glaring errors that turn off your reader before they get into your book.
