The Rusted Lantern by Bill Patterson

An ancient boat dock lantern, pulled from a puddle of seawater high up Sunset Cliffs, takes modern-day teenage surfer Jason Hanson on an edge-of-your-seat adventure through the past, to the year 1858, where the youth witnesses the fate of his mother whom he never met. Along the way, the boy encounters merciless pirates, alluring and deadly sirens, and a mysterious mermaid who tells Jason she knew his mother.

Targeted Age Group:: Young Adult

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
"The Rusted Lantern" was inspired from a short newspaper article that appeared in the "San Diego Tribune" in 2009. During the 1850's, a real-life pirate named Jose' Arvaez roamed the waters off the coast of Southern California, attacking treasure vessels making their way from the gold fields near San Francisco. He never left survivors. One of those ships was the HMS Chelsea. The cabin boy, Tom Bolter, was the only person ever spared by Captain Arvaez. This act of mercy eventually led to the demise of the pirate lord and his followers. The main character from this story, Jason Hanson, is loosely based upon Tom Bolter.

How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
Jason Hanson is based on Tom Bolter, the real life cabin boy from the HMS Chelsea.
Captain Jose' Arvaez was a real pirate from the mid-1800's, renowned for his vicious brutality.
The mermaid was derived from the Robert D. San Souci children's book, "Sukey and the Mermaid."
