You know that stress inventory you can take? You get one point each for a long list of disastrous life events? Let’s just say I have lost count. What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
When the world shut down in March 2020, I was living in Tulsa, Oklahoma, with a plethora of rescue dogs. (In case you’re wondering, a plethora is two dogs more than a pack. This is not science, but it is nonetheless a fact.) In the absence of anyone but my roommate and our canines, I started writing a novel based on one of my favorite stories: the book of Ruth.

For as long as I can remember, the story of Ruth and Naomi has resonated with me.

Something about Ruth’s devotion to her mother-in-law grabbed my heart and would not let go. As I spent twenty months with this text, I realized my own mother is the reason I am so connected to this story. As a military brat raised by a military brat, I can say with certainty wherever my mom goes, I will go. And yet, she also taught me that anywhere I am, she is with me. When you regularly have to pick up everything to move thousands of miles away, you learn to keep the important people in your heart.

How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
Holland is based on the biblical character Ruth. I actually named this character Hannah at first. I had written much of the dialogue when my write-or-die BFF Arlys Avery pointed out that if I named her Hannah, I’d never be able to write about Hannah in 1 Samuel. Oh!

So I wanted to find another H name because I liked how Naomi kept calling her “my heart”. Somewhere along the line, I decided her family name would be Amster and her young mother would have not looked very long for a name to go with Amster. So Holland it was. Of course, now that I have named my character Holland, I hear her name everywhere. Most notably, Tyler Hynes’s new Hallmark Movies & Mysteries holiday movie co-star Holland Roden. If she wants to volunteer to play Holland Gallagher in a screen adaptation, I will not be mad about it! She was great in "It’s Time for Him to Come Home for Christmas".
