Working in flash fiction, the traditional short story and a series of linked stories, Smith takes on race, ethnic identity, class and disability, along with the power dynamics of how they play out in everyday life. He also skewers the pretensions of those who think they are—somehow—above the fray.
Heartbreak leads to a drunken foray into vigilante justice, and the stresses that underlie achievement in high school come to light. A brick from a nineteenth-century city hall in Illinois finds a new place in twenty-first century Texas. Commerce shapes character, but not without resistance. Smith’s fictional world has more than a little in common with other parts of the world—what some continue to call the “real world,” with all its sham and venality. Decisions made in a moment, with incomplete information and uncertain judgment, have permanent consequences. The sins of the fathers are indeed visited upon both sons and daughters.

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
Since this is a collection of short fiction, it represents a variety of inspirations spanning over twenty years. Coming from a background in poetry, in fiction I am willing to see where an interesting phrase leads me. Now and again I take actual experiences and lead them to conclusions far different from what actually happened.

For all the variety in these stories, they stem from a concern with personal agency and moral choice, as well as a desire to empathize with individuals much different from myself.

How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
This answer depends on the story or stories involved.

The first section is in some ways autobiographical, though with distance and a bit of self-parody. This section, like the rest of the book, remains from a memoir, though. If I'd done half the things I've written about I'd be dead or in jail. (Not much of a difference, especially since I'm the kind of person whose survival in jail could be timed with a stopwatch.)

Characters in the other sections include archetypes from fables and folklore, or products of media culture, and other characters still are composites and often parodies of categories such as art market hustlers.

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
My inspiration for writing my vampire romance came in my dreams. It seems most vampire romances started with a poor girl who meets a bad vampire. For me, that just didn't cut it anymore. I started on a completely different path. A mortal man, meets and falls for a beautiful woman and he did not know that she was a vampire. From there, it just took off. I hope you enjoy my different take on vampire romance.

How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
It started with a dream. The dream was of a man that had been taken hostage and his girlfriend saved his life. I woke and immediately thought, what if? What if the girlfriend was a vampire? What if the man did not know it? I got up and starting writing down the outline. That was the first book, A Mortal Indiscretion and from there it just grew into Justin and Ambra's love story. The second book, Marzio's Revenge is the development of Justin's character through trials and tribulations. It is a dark, haunting story full of emotion. The third book Zeus, is a dream I have had for both Justin and Ambra. A completion of their love, full of time travel to Ancient Greece.

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
After learning about the Trail of Tears and watching the outdoor drama, "Unto These Hills," in Cherokee North Carolina, the author was moved to find a way to give the land (of the noble free) back to the original inhabitants. The Indian Removal Act of 1837 was arguably one of the most regrettable and cruel actions in American history. The author wanted to create an alternate history which precluded European conquest of North America.

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I was reading about Celtic mythology – and came across a small hamlet in Wales, near the English border called, Old Radnor. A mile or so north are four standing stones in a farmers field. No-one knows the true origin of these stones, but one story is that they were connected to the old gods.

​However, it wasn't until I got further inspiration from my creative writing group that the story of Jaydon and the Stone of Radnor emerged, grew and took legs. It wasn't by design, maybe I held onto the story and the name of Radnor in my subconscious…some coincidences were meant to be.

How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
I just wrote, the characters became themselves on the page. The more I wrote, the more they developed. I am not a planner – this is my debut novel so I was exploring what worked for me.
