What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I grew up on the outskirts of New York City and went to school in Ohio and North Carolina and lived through a lot of the social change of the 1960s and 1970s. I thought about how a person who grew up in small-town Ohio would come through the same experiences I did, and whether moving back home would be a satisfying life. Part of Carrie Larsen’s enlightenment when she comes home is about how the “squares” she thought she’d left behind have a lot of wisdom, love, and compassion to share.

How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
This novel is one of several I’ve been working on about how the kids who grew up in a family in small-town Ohio deal with life when they attend liberal arts colleges and go on to live in a more “sophisticated” society. There’s been a lot of that in the American experience the last 100 years – my grandparents grew up in rural Indiana, my father came from the mid-West to New York after World War II (and married a woman who was the first-generation American daughter of Swedish and Finnish immigrants), and I feel I got a look into some roots when I went to college away from the East Coast. That’s the American experience my main character, Carrie Larsen, is a part of, along with an appreciation of the natural wonders of our continent and the "can-do" optimistic spirit of so many of our countrymen (and countrywomen). I think the way Carrie comes to grips with it is a large part of what makes her an American classic. My first novel, The Book of Mathew L., is about her big brother, who comes from the same small town to become a liberal academic who works in the Great Society in Washington, D.C. and then gets personally involved in social justice causes in North Carolina in the 1970s.

She also continues receiving hints—mostly in the form of stern, hushed conversations—about Jonesy’s mysterious illness, the nature of his relationship with Uncle Ford, and the secret place he was before arriving at the farm.

Eventually, when she realizes it is no longer in Jonesy’s best interest to stay with her uncle, she enlists the help of her parents to get him removed from the farmhouse. As expected, Uncle Ford is less than happy when he learns of Jonesy’s disappearance, and he takes out his frustrations by drinking heavily and physically abusing Sera.

After enduring numerous beatings and assaults, Sera confides in a family friend, Kailas, who was sent by her mom and dad to ensure her well-being after Jonesy successfully escapes. Unfortunately, similar to her parents, Kailas is strapped for cash and cannot provide Sera with safety under her roof. But she gifts a set of instructions that will allow Sera to escape into what she initially believes is a deep meditative state. However, Sera soon realizes she has actually been given access to an alternate reality she never dreamed existed . . .

Since I was a kid, I've had very wild and vivid dreams. This book series stemmed from just one of them. I have a detailed post about that on my blog.

In a weird way, they kind of wrote themselves. I didn't find it hard to come up with any of the characters. He or she just popped up and organically fit into the storyline.

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I first learned about Liesl Boeckel at the Moravian Museum in Bethlehem, where I’ve worked for many years as a volunteer docent. I knew nothing of Lafayette’s possible romance with a Moravian woman until the museum added a new exhibit with a painting of Liesl, Mrs. Boeckel, and Lafayette. I could hardly believe this unlikely connection between the Moravians and my favorite Frenchman. I remember thinking that someone needed to write a book about this. And then, a little voice inside me said, Why not you?

How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
My historical characters were easier to create because I could research their lives and their time period, and they brought with them actual events that provided a basic structure for their stories. I had access to a wealth of information regarding Lafayette, including his own writings, which helped me to envision his behavior. Although documentation on Liesl was quite sketchy, I had access to information on eighteenth-century Moravian life, and the knowledge I had accumulated as a long-time volunteer docent at the Moravian Museum in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

My modern-day characters are purely fictional and required more effort to create. I initially drew from my life experiences but modified them to fit the story. For example, the friendship between Abbey and Kera is inspired by my relationship with my best friend, but my fictional characters evolved in ways that bear no resemblance to myself or my friend. It really is true that a book takes on a life of its own and often leads you to unexpected places.

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
It’s a novel that came to me to encourage and wake up Starseeds everywhere after I caught wind of young and talented actor/singer/model/deep thinker Zhang Zhehan who was blacklisted in China for something we in the US would consider innocent and ignore. As I delved more into the issue I saw how it greatly impacted the young man involved as well as all his fans around the world as well as his costar Simon Gong Jun. And I thought what if Zhang’s earth mission is to go through this but also to overcome and rise above it as a Starseed? How different would the outcome be?

How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
While a fictionalized account, my main characters are based on two real life actors and performing artists, one of which is currently being unjustly accused and dragged into a nationwide scandal with far reaching consequences for him including destroying his career and livelihood as an artist in his home country.
As his story is very compelling and impacts not only these actors, but millions of fans around the world, it inspired me to write this book about them to encourage people.
