What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
Visting the sandy, dry hills of Virginia City Nevada. The old sidewalks, saloons, and history came alive.
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
Miss Laney Balderhoff is the fun quirky, OCD big-hearted school teacher. I needed a lighter heroin to write and she fit the bill.
Sawyer Roth was what every hero should be. Rugged and brave, riding the Wells Fargo line as a shotgun messenger.
Book Excerpt/Sample
Laney picked up the handle to her parasol and shaded her face while watching for any movement from across the way. Her fingers tapped up and down the handle. She took a deep breath before stepping off the small platform. The driver and gunmen stepped out onto the wooden sidewalk, and their gruff conversation slowed her steps. A feeling in her belly said they were not happy to have her. The older man slapped his dust-filled bandana on his dirty pants and shrugged his shoulders while the tall, younger one shook his head again. Unhappy head to toe, the taller man turned and walked toward her. Hidden under a wide-felt hat, dark brown eyes slanted over her. She almost took a step backward. For such a ruggedly well-proportioned face and incredible handsomeness, he was a bit surly-looking at this moment.
“Ma’am.” He tipped his hat, and everything softened a bit, making him even more strikingly attractive.
“Ahh, yes, sir.” Laney prayed she didn’t appear too cockeyed.
He removed his hat and raked his fingers through thick brown hair. Laney quickly looked away. Every movement he made caused her cheeks to flush, and she knew she was gawking.
“Thing is…” Even his voice meshed perfectly with his size and stance—not too soft, but not too rough either. She tried to meet his gaze, but it was almost impossible.
“Better for you to get on to Virginia City tomorrow.” His finger pulled across the corner of his mouth. “There’ll be another stage before noon.”
She was rarely speechless but now was highly aware that her mouth was hanging open. “Sir, I have traveled from Bellevue, Nebraska. My companion, my aunt, had to take a medical leave in Cherry Springs. I assured her I could make this last stage of my trip alone.” And her body ached for a real bed. “Are there no other passengers who are as anxious as I to get to Virginia City?”
He dropped his chin to the side and scanned the empty street. “No.” He tucked his hat tight around his forehead. “Good day, ma’am.” He turned to walk away.
“Sir.” Laney hurried to meet his long steps. “Please. Can you explain why I’m not welcome on your stage?”
The Wells Fargo man had the nerve to keep walking until he came up to the horses. Patting the mare’s sleek back neck, he checked the harness, ignoring her.
“The coach says Wells Fargo and Company.” Laney started in. “Where I come from, the employees are polite and responsible. May I please speak to your elder? The man driving the coach.”
The rogue looked up and ran his tongue across his straight teeth. “He’s inside, we flipped a coin to tell you, and I lost.” He stepped away and checked the straps on the cargo. “I heard you’re the new teacher, so you must have some smarts.” With a dismissive sigh, he moved away. “You’ll hitch your ride tomorrow.”
