Lacking self-worth, a few years after high school I joined a religious cult where I spent the next 23 years loathing myself (to say the least). Everything was about completely denying myself in order to focus on "saving the world." Often my heart was screaming for personal love and attention but I couldn't listen because of religious dogma. I lived to fulfill my mission (and suffered tremendously in the process). Eventually however, I could no longer continue living that way. In 1998 I finally found the courage to walk away from that lifestyle (and a 16-year arranged marriage).
During the last 14 years I went through tons of healing modalities attempting to deal with a variety of emotions that were (and always had been) wreaking havoc in my life, but with little lasting success. It was only when I realized that no one else can possibly "heal" me that everything changed. I began treating myself with honor, acceptance, respect, and most especially, love and compassion, and discovered that emotions, when they are accepted and feel safe, come into balance.

I was born and raised in Alaska. My town, called North Pole, was pretty small and I spent many nights writing away in my room as I watched snow fall outside my window. When I was younger, I started off writing mostly poetry and short stories. I was first nationally published when I was 16 and my first volume of poetry was published when I was 18. I had some minor success as a poet and short story writer, but after I graduated high school and left home for Chicago, I went to film school and that is when I knew I wanted to make the transition to screenwriting. During film school I studied Motion Picture and Television Screenwriting and I've been writing screenplay and scripts full-time ever since. I've sold a handful of short scripts and currently have a feature script being optioned.

Born in northern Ontario in 1958. My first home was in Thunder Bay, ON but soon after, when I was a toddler, my family moved to White Rock, BC.
I wrote and drew pictures as a child, all of which, I'm embarrassed to say, my parents kept. At about 20 years old I moved to Vancouver, working as a gardener. I got a lot of jobs but after I came out to eastern Canada, with the snow six months of the year, gardening was over.
I took various unskilled jobs but also drew and painted and sculpted. I sold some but didn't find it gave me much satisfaction, later, in my thirties, I came back to writing. The Mountain City Bronzes was actually started in the 1990's but not finished until years later.
My hobbies are genealogy and other kinds of historical research, and walking.

My credits to date include 30 books, 146 stage plays, 5 optioned feature films and squillions of articles and interviews that appear in trade publications throughout the world. I'm a professional ghostwriter and script consultant for stage and screen, as well as an instructor and former actress/director. I've been writing professionally for over 30 years and have always believed that it's essential to give back to aspiring writers by sharing "been there/done that" advice to assist and nurture their own journey toward publication and/or production.
I'm especially proud of my latest project, a new release called "Media Magnetism: How to Attract the Favorable Publicity You Want and Deserve." As editor, I brought together two dozen media industry colleagues to deliver insider tips, resources and guidelines on topics such as how to make influential connections, become sound-bite savvy, endear yourself to reporters, survive awkward moments, use social media wisely, and manage a cost-effective advertising campaign. The book's companion website at http://www.mediamagnetism.org features monthly contributor blogs, news about upcoming books and workshops, and an answer bag component where visitors can post questions specific to their own PR needs.
I hold a BA degree in Communications with an emphasis on Audience Analysis and Message Design, an area of specialization that has enabled me to work in all aspects of media.

"I make the world insist on knowing why you're special, and I help the world see the value in your values."
My primary niche is green marketing: braiding together the commonalities between professional communication and personal activism. I've been in both the marketing and environmental worlds since the 1970s, and for the last dozen years, have worked to combine them more systematically (though I actually had a few green clients all the way back to the early days).
--> I get especially excited when I get the chance to promote simple, elegant solutions that offer multiple benefits to solve complex problems (for example, not just being greener, but costing less and increasing comfort or durability). When I see people harnessing the "practical visionary" attitudes of people like Amory Lovins or Buckminster Fuller to create a small-space vertical garden for apartment dwellers, neutralize the odor and stain of urine so flushing can be much-reduced, or combine green energy, job creation, and economic development--I want to help!
I work with companies and organizations to:
* Identify what they're already doing that's green as well as what else they could be doing to become more green (especially the stuff that costs little or nothing, or has a very quick ROI)
* Create and sharpen messages that actually motivate the green customer
* Find the points of connection with nongreen audiences and show them how the green offering is better quality, lower cost, or otherwise useful--because it's not enough to preach to the choir
* Explore creative, effective, and inexpensive ways to market the brand and communicate these messages to others: for example:
-Finding and networking with organizations or companies that already reach your target market, and joining forces with them to come in as a trusted partner and ally
-Gaining exposure in traditional media (I personally have been quoted repeatedly in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Entrepreneur, and many other prominent publications)
-Using social media marketing--the RIGHT ways
-Selling by educating, collaborating, and especially LISTENING
I do this through several different platforms:
* As a strategic marketing consultant and copywriter, working individually with businesses, nonprofits, entrepreneurs, and grassroots organizations
* As the bestselling and multiple award-winning author of eight books (most recently, Guerrilla Marketing Goes Green, published by Wiley)
* In my internationally syndicated monthly column, Green And Profitable
* And as an international speaker.
My other niche is turning unpublished writers into well-published authors, and then helping them market their books once they're done. Whether you need to find a traditional publisher or become your own publisher, I will help your book see the light of day in the best possible form, and help you get the word out about it.
Several of my clients' books have won awards, and I take special joy in shepherding a book through the process of getting written, edited, and designed to be a work that any publisher would be proud of (and at the same time, saving the world from books that weren't ready as they were first presented to me).
Finally, as an activist, I can claim a number of victories, including saving a mountain close to my house...getting the first nonsmokers' rights regulations passed in Northampton, Massachusetts...helping to make nuclear power a nonstarter for three decades...and in some small ways, helping to create a climate that fosters a positive relationship with the earth, ethical behavior in business, and an economy rooted in local community self-sufficiency.
Passionate About
Social change, environmental justice, protecting the planet, the power of great ideas, and having fun throughout the whole thing
Idea Worth Spreading
Running an eco-friendly and ethical business based on helping your clients/customers meet needs, achieve goals, and.or solve problems can be a powerful recipe for business success.
Talk to Me About
1. Social change through mainstream channels involves showing others their self-interest in improving the world.
2. Deep-seated change can be less work than marginal improvements, so think big!
People Don't Know That I'm Good At
Cooking delicious vegetarian meals...finding unusual ways to see a new place...saving money on the fun things that make life worth living
My TED Story
I discovered TED talks online about six or seven years ago, and have been deeply moved by the best presenters' ability to push for the same types of simple, elegant solutions to complex problems that I mentioned above.I would love to be a TED speaker, and have applied to talk at some of the TEDx events. I'm deeply grateful for so much shared wisdom and would love to be a part of it (and to find a way that politicians around the world could get TED talks as part of their orientation, because most fo them think far too small).

Laura Huntt Foti always thought she would write a book before she was 30. Now she knows better. It’s been almost 40 years since the events that inspired her debut novel, The Cusp of Everything, yet they are still fresh in her mind. She consoles herself about the long gestation period with the conviction that at least she brought to the book the wisdom of extreme hindsight.
Laura grew up in Westchester County, New York, where her novel is set, and earned a B.A. in journalism from New York University. Following graduation, she worked as a writer specializing in the then-new field of music video. As Billboard’s Video Editor, she organized the magazine’s Video Music Conference, including the 1983 Video Music Awards ceremony at which Mary Wilson of The Supremes—who play a pivotal role in the book—was a presenter.
She moved to Los Angeles in 1987 and joined the interactive software division of Philips Electronics, working as a senior executive in product development, marketing and business development before launching her own consulting firm, Sound Input LLC, in 1996. Projects range from curriculum development for Scholastic, Kaplan, Inc. and K-12 to marketing for Fox Mobile, Bertoli, Microsoft and Motorola, among others. She writes most of the content for her own long-running website HellishHolidays.com and previously ran a love and dating site for two years.
The Cusp of Everything might still be unfinished if not for an accident in the summer of 2009. Crossing Pacific Coast Highway in a crosswalk in Laguna Beach, California, an impatient driver whipped around a waiting car and knocked Laura to the ground. She came to in the middle of the road, surrounded by lifeguards, bemoaning her potential book-free obituary.
The book is a coming-of-age tale told from the viewpoint of Karen Walsh, the main character and narrator, who dreams that moving to Manhattan and finding love will solve all her teenage problems. Laura recreates the era of suburban New York in the mid-1970’s, best remembered as a time when sex and sexuality were no longer taboo subjects and change was a way of life. Karen and society were on “the cusp of everything.”
The Cusp of Everything is also a book with a soundtrack—perhaps the first of its kind—with the music of the time evoking the spirit of a world in transition. There are references to more than 200 songs throughout the text, setting the tone and the time frame. From “classic rock” before it was classic and “Old School” when it was still new, to Top 40 and the early days of disco, with a special helping of Diana Ross and the Supremes, Cusp’s music runs the gamut of what was in the air at the time. A playlist by chapter is available at cuspofeverything.com.
Laura lives in Los Angeles with her teenage son and is a dedicated volunteer, active in many local organizations, among them the Los Angeles Public Library, Windsor Square-Hancock Park Historical Society and the Los Angeles Conservancy. She is on the Board of the Ebell of Los Angeles and serves as the Club’s Publications Chair, writing and editing a monthly magazine. She is also active in NYU Journalism’s alumni activities.

I'm a former high school math teacher and computer entrepreneur - turned artist, author and inventor! My education was highly technical; engineering, mathematics, and economics. When people began referring to me as an "artist" I felt confused and a little embarrassed. I had never considered the matter.
Over time I have come to understand that I am an artist; in fact everyone is an artist. Each person combines their unique perspective, a lifetime of seeing, touching, feeling and experiencing, into their work. My goal is to unleash the artist in you. I consider myself no more than a facilitator. My techniques are designed to be simple, yet they have infinite possibilities.
Perhaps you will express your artistic side, just like I do, with a discrete emphasis on the technical, or maybe you will discover an aspect of this art form I have not yet explored. Whichever path you choose, I hope you will enjoy following it, and my books are here to help you along the way.
Origami Bonsai is my first book and one of three books in a series for creating botanical sculptures made from paper.
Origami 101 is a book that takes several new approaches to teaching origami. My hope is that this book will make origami accessible to the scores of people that previously considered it too complex.
You can see many more pictures of Origami Bonsai sculptures made by people from all over the world, as well as a free magazine devoted to Origami Bonsai, and folding videos and lots more at http://www.OrigamiBonsai.org

In the mid-1980s Penchant for Penning began as a means to promote my writing services to local publications (San Diego). While I sought writing assignments, I sold original stationery designs to augment PFP. By the 1990s I had garnered a few articles and made a move to Phoenix; but continued to write for San Diego antiques & collectibles magazines. Frustrated with writing as a sideline to my work in executive administration, I began working for a small press publisher.
As a writer, editor, go-fer, company rep, whatever they wanted me to do, after a couple of years in the industry I could see the writing on the wall. Although "self publishing" had gained popularity by the early 2000s, it still did not have the fine reputation of traditional publishing -- I knew that would soon change. With my unique insights on both sides of the proverbial printing press, I began imparting my knowledge with other authors, urging them to either truly self-publish or use an independent publishing company.
I and Penchant for Penning grew into a safe haven for Phoenix authors, providing a special focus in the Women Writers of the Desert organization I founded in 2001. I produced several local writers' conferences and we independently published a group anthology, "Love in Bloom." But by 2007 I needed to return to my beloved San Diego and the group disbanded -- Women Writers Worldwide is now an online only resource for all writers -- and Penchant for Penning has grown into a solid author consulting firm.

Award-winning author (St. Martins Press) and entrepreneur Maryann Reid has been featured by countless media outlets including USA Today, Essence, Glamour, The CBS Early Show, and The Wendy Williams Experience.
Maryann’s first book Sex and the Single Sister: 5 Novellas was published by St. Martins Press when she was just 25 years old. At that time, Maryann had no idea that a few stories she wrote in her journal would become characters and later become a book. But she quickly learned the power of the media and pop culture influence on publishers and their decision-making. Because of the popularity of HBO’s Sex and The City, she hit the zeitgeist she sold her first book without it being finished. She signed her first book deal with St. Martins and the strong support of a stellar agent.
Several books later, Maryann teaches others how they can sell their own books, attract agents and publicity in half the time they would on their own.
When her third novel Marry Your Baby Daddy was published, Maryann was able to address a social issue that she cared deeply about and rally a new movement. As a result, she and her books have been profiled in The New Yorker, Newsweek, Oprah.com, NBC Nightly News, etc. for her innovative approach to life and solving its complex issues.
Later, Marry Your Baby Daddy was optioned by Hollywood actress Holly Robinson-Peete and Dolores Robinson and is still a part of Maryann’s growing platform as social entrepreneur.
As an author and professional speaker, Maryann has gathered a diverse roster of credentials and affiliations:
Author of 5 novels and several short stories by St Martins Press and Penguin Putnam
Lifestyle expert at Alphanista.com
Held appointments as adjunct professor at various universities including St John’s University, City University of NY, Fordham University, etc., where she taught courses in Creative Writing, Creative Nonfiction, Research and Business Communications
Referred to as the “Oprah of Brooklyn” for her work with women and philanthropic efforts like Marry Your Baby Daddy Day
Guest expert and social commentator on top-rated nationally syndicated radio shows like NPR’s Fresh Air, The Michael Baisden Show, Fox News Radio, CBS Radio, The Gayle King Show on Oprah Radio, etc
Invited by USATODAY to write a novella, Single Black Female, for the acclaimed Open Book section of their website
Maryann has been invited to speak to some of the most innovative groups all over the country and has received over 20 million media impressions worldwide via major news outlets like ABC News 20/20, NBC Nightly News and CNN. She is a popular guest lecturer at colleges, where she has taught her publishing and media techniques to influential groups and thought leaders.

She is a founding member and board member of International Thriller Writers and the founder of the first marketing company for authors: AuthorBuzz.com. She runs two popular blogs; Buzz, Balls & Hype and Backstory.
Getting published has been an adventure for Rose who self-published Lip Service late in 1998 after several traditional publishers turned it down. Editors had loved it, but didn't know how to position it or market it since it didn't fit into any one genre.
Frustrated, but curious and convinced that there was a readership for her work, she set up a web site where readers could download her book for $9.95 and began to seriously market the novel on the Internet.
After selling over 2500 copies (in both electronic and trade paper format) Lip Service became the first e-book and the first self-published novel chosen by the LiteraryGuild/Doubleday Book Club as well as being the first e-book to go on to be published by a mainstream New York publishing house.
Rose has been profiled in Time magazine, Forbes, The New York Times, Business 2.0, Working Woman, Newsweek and New York Magazine.
Rose has appeared on The Today Show, Fox News, The Jim Lehrer NewsHour, and features on her have appeared in dozens of magazines and newspapers in the U.S. and abroad, including USAToday, Stern, L'Official, Poets and Writers and Publishers Weekly.
Rose graduated from Syracuse University and spent the '80s in advertising. She was the Creative Director of Rosenfeld Sirowitz and Lawson and she has a commercial in the Museum of Modern Art in NYC.
She lives in Connecticut with Doug Scofield, a composer, and their very spoiled dog, Winka.

The son of a toll collector, Craig grew up in an apartment housing project in
the Bronx, with “tales of a misspent youth” as his background.
However, because of his unyielding optimism and his "iron man" work ethic... Craig somehow managed to overcome divorce, bankruptcy, and an extremely dysfunctional childhood, to become one of the highest paid and most in-demand copywriters and direct-marketing consultants in America.
A long way from the gritty apartment housing projects he grew up in, today Craig lives in a sprawling lake-house just outside of Tampa, Florida, with his wife Anne and their three children, and their dogs and cats. When he’s not working, you’ll nd him traveling, working out, taking photos, out back reading and smoking a cigar, listening to music, or bass fishing on his lake.

My background includes working for about 15 years as a child care worker and pre-school teacher, the manager and events coordinator of a flagship store for Indigo books and music and and as a freelance writer and publicity manager. My first love has always been writing and after some early successes with publishing I became interested in telling other people's stories. I started this company when the publicity firm that I was working for closed its doors and all the clients had no place to go. Since we were in the middle of campaigns I decided that I could take over their accounts and see if I could provide them with all the services they needed as a publicist. Now 2 years and 8 months later I am running a successful business with my own freelance contractors providing publicity to a variety of clients.

Alana Nicole Sholar was born as Alan in 1961 as part of a close-knit, church-going family who lived and worked on several now-famous thoroughbred horse farms in the central region of Kentucky, the Bluegrass state.
One of Alan’s earliest childhood memories is putting on his mother’s clothes (as shown on the cover of Hung in the Middle) and discovering not only that it felt good, but it just seemed right. With no understanding of why it seemed right, this experience sent Alan into years of hiding how he felt from everyone—including self-denial. After all, in that place—rural central Kentucky—and at that time—1960’s—this was not something to be talked about, let alone admitted, ever.
Alan, like most middle-class Americans, held blue-collar jobs including construction, over-the-road truck driver, and in a factory. Alan’s name was legally changed in 2005—one of the first steps in the journey toward becoming, and accepting, Alana Nicole.
Alana still lives in the same small town of Versailles in central Kentucky—even after coming out by writing her book, Hung in the Middle: A Journey of Gender Discovery. She is married, has one son, and a granddaughter.

Entrepreneur, business leader, international speaker, radio show host, author and father Christos Efessiou knows a thing or two about success. In the past 20 years, Chris has founded, co-founded, developed, and managed multiple successful enterprises—all the while being a committed and present single parent.
Widely known for his business acumen, empowering management style, and out of the box thinking, Chris is committed to inspiring and guiding working parents to attain success at work and at home. Through speaking, coaching and his book CDO Chief Daddy Officer, he clearly defines the fundamentals of solid leadership critical in both arenas, and provides tools, tips and advice on how to transfer business skills to the business of parenting and personal relationships.
His story is a testament to any entrepreneur’s bravery and strives towards jubilation. Chris left his homeland of Greece at the age of 19 to enroll as an exchange student at a U.S. high school in the Boston area. He had less than a year to learn a language he did not speak and earn admittance to an American college or else he would be forced to return to Greece to work for his father’s company—a future that would be undoubtedly secure, yet dishearteningly dependent. Now the founder, President, and CEO of SRxA-Strategic Pharmaceutical Advisors, an international consulting, marketing, and education firm, Chris’s story is a testament to every young person’s brave first steps out along that quivering, indefinite, yet ultimately rewarding wire of risk.
A sought after mentor and teacher, Chris is a visiting professor and guest lecturer at numerous academic institutions, including George Mason University’s School of Management, and Northeastern University. A business leader and advocate, Chris serves as member of the Management Committee of the Small Business Council of the United States Chamber of Commerce, and is a keynote speaker on various topics, nationally and internationally.
Affecting future generations of business leaders by bringing CDO’s message to college classrooms around the nation is Chris’s ultimate goal. He will also work with entrepreneurs and business professionals to help them develop and successfully transfer their skills from the office to the home.

My name is China Reed & I started RPIC with a vision to provide authors with an affordable medium for representation. With the formal years of "standard" book sales decades behind us, I wanted to develope a solution to make the author feel that yes they can afford a publicist & gain the exposure that their book deserved. It has quickly expanded to multiple cities, and has even begin integrating books to film. I can attest, that when you have a vision , put in the work and see it materialize, because it truly will!
