Break free from the lies and manipulation that are keeping you captive
You’re positive you saw a flirty text from another woman on your husband’s phone. Yet, when you confront him, he tells you you’re imagining things and being paranoid.
A co-worker sarcastically mentions that you’re not contributing enough to the big project. When you get offended, they say they were just joking and that you’re too sensitive.
Your mother constantly criticizes your weight. When you bring up her comments around other people, she denies ever saying them and says you are making up stories.
Have you repeatedly found yourself in these types of situations where you end up doubting yourself?
They might have occurred with different people, in different circumstances, but the way they make you feel is the same.
Your feelings are trivialized, your thoughts are manipulated, and your reality is denied.
When this is done to you repeatedly, you begin to feel confused or even crazy. You are left questioning your own reality and sanity.
These are classic signs that you’re being gaslighted, and it’s something to take very seriously.
Gaslighting is a covert form of abuse that affects your confidence and trust in yourself, which the abuser then takes advantage of to keep you under their control.
Whether it’s a spouse, parent, or co-worker, it’s hard to break loose from the grip of a gaslighting manipulator.
You will need to know how gaslighters operate, how their behavior is affecting you, and how you can reclaim your truth.
In Gaslighting & Narcissistic Abuse Recovery, you will discover:
● The sneaky tactics gaslighters employ that catch you off-guard and make you more vulnerable to their exploitation
● How to hold on to your grip on reality, despite the gaslighter’s efforts to undermine it
● Powerful ways to respond to gaslighters, block their attacks, and take back control of the conversation
● Why self-care is a critical component in coping with abuse, especially if you need to regularly interact with a gaslighter
● The shift in mindset to help you finally gain the courage to escape an abusive relationship
● What you need to do after leaving a gaslighting relationship to make sure you don’t fall into the same cycle again
● Why you shouldn’t expect any closure from your abuser, and why you can still move on without it
● How to rebuild your sense of self after years of being torn down by others
And much more.
Acknowledging that you’re being abused is the first step towards recovery.
After years of gaslighting, you may be so used to it that you no longer recognize this is not a normal way to live.
You might believe that there’s no way out, or you can’t imagine life without the one who’s manipulating you.
But if you truly want to be able to live life on your own terms, cutting yourself off from the source of your pain is essential.
It won’t happen overnight, and it will take committed effort, but you can feel like yourself again – the person you used to be… the person you’re meant to be.

| Pushing a Rock Up a Hill: The Sisyphean task of modern motherhood by Amy Ryan |
|
|

In this chapbook of poetry and prose, Amy explores life after birth taking us from the rage she experienced in new motherhood through the ugly parts of her struggling (and, at times, hostile) marriage, continuing on to a second pregnancy. While starting a company, she raised her first child and found herself in the midst of an identity crisis that highlights the negative aspects of modern parenting. After bearing the burden of an exhaustive mental lode, she found refuge in writing this book and hopes that other woman can find validation in these pages that fearlessly take on the ugly, embarrassing, shameful parts of motherhood and marriage. Especially after this year’s pandemic, it helps to have a little validation for just how hard it can all be.

A love story that carries its bitterness. How much happiness life will bring us, it will also take away from us what we least expect. How many life meetings will all the stars show us?! There may be an unexpected number of them, but there’s only one hidden between them that’s been meant for us a long time ago to follow. Someone’s going to live a long life, but they’re not going to be met by what’s supposed to completely enlighten him and make him happy. And vice versa. He didn’t give anyone a fate to be in this world for a very long time, but he’ll be struck by what would envy the one who survived a hundred years. Sometimes it seems that the suffering has no end, and yet we meet a man who lights up our stars for life. It’s love. And it can only be genuine if it brings with it pain, suffering and loss. This life story that describes this journey is no different from these life’s rules.

The plane was slowly landing. I watched the landing progress from the window. For the first time in my life, I've seen the sea, albeit only from the plane window yet. We landed in Tel Aviv at the airport. From the plane window, the view of Tel Aviv is fascinating. It's a seaside town, big and sunny. As we took a taxi across the coast of Tel Aviv, I felt like I was in paradise. It's beautiful. We arrived by taxi to a pre-arranged position where a minibus was waiting for us. There were three of us. Me, Edo – Štefan's cousin and Mário from Poprad City. Edo is as tall as the Eiffel Tower, measuring about a hundred and ninety-eight centimetres, but its intimidating height is offset by a peaceful nature. And he's very hardworking. Before that, he worked at a car factory in Bratislava City. Mário from Poprad City is a more overwhelmed and very savvy boy. He has had fifteen years of Aikido (Japanese martial arts) exercises. Right after leaving school, he worked as an assistant coach to Aikido. That's really good in a foreign world, you never know what kind of situation he can get into. It was heat, forty-one degrees. The minibus was air conditioned and we were just on our way to Ashkelon. It is also a seaside town, but much smaller than Tel Aviv. In Ashkton, four Slovaks have been working in fruit warehouses for two years. The three of us had a promised job in Car Wash. Car wash station. The main road from Tel Aviv to Ashkelon stretches along the coast of Israel. It's really beautiful, I couldn't wait to run out to the beach and take a bath in the sea for the first time. After a long journey, we finally arrived at our house in Ashkton. Nice ground floor house on a very nice street. I have to say that Israel cares very much about the environment, there is absolute order and cleanliness everywhere. We walked into the house and stayed. Each of us had our own room. There was a big kitchen, a brand new shower… Everything was beautifully shiny. Very stylish modern furnishings. I was expecting something much worse, but we found ourselves really in luxury. There was a market right across the street, so we only had it to jump into the store.
The next morning, we were up at 6:00. At 7:00, we left the house and went to an address we had marked on paper. It was only ten minutes from our house where Car Wash stood. We walked into a small office where a 55-year-old man was sitting at a desk. He looked at us and smiled. That was a good sign. He came up to me and shook my hand. He introduced himself as Joachim. Of course, all the conversations took place in English, as we did not understand the Hebrew language at all.
"So I'm so glad you're here. I'm the boss of this car wash. It's a good job, you don't have to worry, you'll learn everything gradually. Two boys from Hungary work here with me and I am very happy with them, I believe you will get along well."
I have to point out that when Joachim started talking, I was relieved, all the tension dropped because he was fair, sympathetic and intelligent. He impressed me very pleasantly right away.
"Your papers are fine, I've looked at everything, you're allowed to work in Israel for a year, and then if you want to be here longer, we'll do something. Come on, I'll go after the company and you can start working today, of course you'll have it included in your paycheck."
We went through the whole dishwasher operation, Joachim put each of us in position and started working. The car came. First it went into the automatic dishwasher. The washed came out the other side and then we got on. One was in charge of wheels and discs. He must have polished them with a special rag and preparations. The other was in charge of the dashboard and interior. He had to vacuum the car. The third was in charge of the windows. He had to clean them from the outside and on the inside. There were also additional services – in agreement with the customer. This whole process of washing and then cleaning and polishing the car always took fifteen minutes. It was a perfectly redesigned and timed system. I really liked the work and I can say that I have been very happy with this job all the time in Israel. Boss Joachim was kind and friendly, he was never condescending or rude. He had patience for each of us and responded appropriately to every possible situation that occurred. This is how I always imagined the boss. Then one feels really good at work when there is peace and humanity. We kept getting to know some stories about our natives who had their work permits terminated and sent back home. Or as whoever has fallen, in what bad collective and in what conditions they live… I thanked every day for getting right here, among the tolerant people where no one humiliated us. They often asked where we came from. The second question for the most part was, "Do you like Israel?"
I always replied: "Yes, very." After this answer, everyone was very, proud and incisive.
We've been healthy since day two: Shalom. Every day and with everyone. Everyone always got better, and often the question fell:
"Where are you from?"
"From Slovakia."
"And where do you work?"
"I work at Joachim's in a car wash."
"Oh, that's my friend, so say hello from me."
"Okay, I'll say hello."
"Shalom."
"Shalom."
People in Israel are curious when they find out you're a foreigner, they're intrigued by where and who you work with. My boss Joachim knows the whole city and the surrounding area, so they will treat him the way they treat him. In pre-interpreting, it probably means something like this: … When Joachim takes a man in and he works with him, it means he's become a member of his family. Joachim takes care of him. So I'm going to treat him the way I treat Joachim… It's probably a locally unwritten rule. As they say, a different region, a different moral. We Slovaks are not used to this kind of thinking.
There was a saleswoman working in the shopping center opposite our house, with whom we were increasingly exchanging knees. I didn't even realize it until the day she spoke to me. The name Ráchel was on the name on the name of the name On the label she was pinned to the uniform of the store.
"So what, you're not working today?"
I was left stunned.
"No, I'm off today, so I'm going to go for a walk."
We were looking at each other, and she didn't let our start-up debate stand still for long.
"I'm finishing at 5:00 this afternoon, if you want to, to go for a walk together somewhere on the coast."
I didn't believe what I was hearing, but, of course, I agreed.
"Where are you from?"
"I'm from Slovakia," I replied to her.
"Don't you mind?"
"And why should I wonder where you are from, how it is in Slovakia, how it lives there… Do you have any pictures?"
"I have, yes, if you want, then I'll show you tonight."
People have already kicked in behind me, I quickly paid off the purchase.

Melanie Davis is alive but not really living. Years ago, she faced an unspeakable tragedy that left her crippled socially. Her life consists of her career and coming home to an empty house devoid of love. That all changes when she meets a mysterious stranger. One who’s a dead ringer for the deceased lead singer of her favorite rock band, Lush.
Caesar Blue died in a tragic accident when he was twenty-eight. The gorgeous music superstar left behind a lucrative career and three bandmates who were devastated by his death. None more so than his best friend, Johnnie Vega.
Drummer Johnnie Vega always had a weakness for drugs and alcohol, and after losing his best friend, his world spun out of control. No matter how many trips to rehab he makes, Johnnie can’t shake the guilt over his friend’s death, nor the addiction he struggles with.
When Melanie realizes Caesar Blue has indeed returned to the world of the living, she finds herself falling for the enigmatic rock star. Not only does he set her on a path to fulfill her lifelong dreams, but his disarming sexuality reignites passions she long ago buried. But when Caesar’s mission to help her brings her face to face with her favorite band member, Johnnie Vega, things get complicated. As she begins to fall under the spell of her teenage crush, she discovers she and Johnnie have a mysterious connection. One that compelled Caesar to bring the two of them together.
But can falling in love with a ghost and his addict best friend be a good thing?

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
In summer of 2017, I dreamed of meeting the ghost of rock legend, Michael Hutchence, while browsing through the DVD bin at Wal Mart. I woke thinking this would make a great book idea. I filed it away in my head with all the other book ideas, until November of that year when I saw an interview with the surviving members of INXS. I realized it was the 20th anniversary of Michael's death and immediately began writing the tale of a woman who meets the ghost (or angel) of the lead singer of her favorite band. I finished the book in three months, which was my fastest written book so far. (I do have a day job) The entire time I felt Michael's presence with me, guiding me in my work. He had a hand in it for sure, and it's why the book and the sequel are dedicated to him.
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
My muse for Caesar Blue is Michael Hutchence since he inspired this tale. Anyone who is a fan of INXS will recognize some similarities between them. For Johnnie Vega, I went with my favorite INXS member for my inspiration. Drummer Jon Farriss is my muse. These two male characters met through circumstance and bonded over a love of creating music, so even though their personalities are very different, they have a close friendship that is "eternal". They are brothers. The other two band members from Lush are Kurt and Rhett and the inspiration for those guys was Kirk Pengilly of INXS and Bono of U2. As for my female lead, I pulled things from my own life. She was born in San Diego, I place I've visited, raised in Jacksonville, just like me, and when we meet her, she lives in Atlanta which had become one of my favorite cities. She falls in love with vintage inspired clothing, like my daughter. And she's a writer, like me. I once dated an alcoholic so I brought some of that knowledge to Melanie's storyline as well. Melanie is broken when we meet her and for her backstory I chose one of the worst traumas a parent can go through.

“I guess this is the part where things get difficult.” He sighed. “I knew it might be hard to explain.”
“Excuse me?”
Quickly, he sat back up. “How big of a Lush fan were you?”
“They were my favorite band during high school and college.”
“Was Johnnie really your favorite?” He narrowed his eyes. “Or did you just say that to rattle me?”
“Yes…” She laughed lightly. “And yes.”
Looking away, he picked a dandelion and twirled it between his fingers. “We were always so competitive with one another. Seems so stupid now.”
“Who?”
“Johnnie and me.”
“You know him? Is he okay? I tried to search for information about him after I met you, but I found nothing recent.”
His gaze went skyward. “Yes, I know Johnnie. We’re like brothers. Went to school together…created together…”
“Come on, you’re taking this lookalike thing way too seriously.” She nudged his leg gently. “Wait. I’ve got it. They’re making a movie about the band, and you’re playing Caesar. That’s it, right?”
“You think I’m an actor?”
She scooted closer, examining his face. Reaching out, she brushed back the curls from his eyes. “Have you always looked like him? Or did they perm and color your hair to look like his?”
Roughly, he grabbed her wrist. “Look at me, Melanie. Really look at me.”
“How do you know my name?”
“I know things.” He loosened his grip on her hand and rubbed her wrist gently.
She gazed into his eyes. Deep, dark brown eyes that seemed to penetrate her soul. Over his left eye, a small scar. In the band’s early days, they’d played the bar circuit, and one night a drunk patron had thrown a bottle at…Caesar.
Her hands flew to her mouth as she gasped. Timidly, she reached out again, her index finger softly stroking the scar.
“A drunk idiot. Thank God all I got was a scar. He could have put my eye out. Rhett and Johnnie beat the shit out of him while Kurt took me to the hospital for stitches.”
Grabbing his wrist, she slid his jacket and shirt sleeve up his arm. On his underarm, just above his wrist, a tattoo of an angel resided there, with Caesar’s mother’s name. Naomi. She died of cancer when he was twelve.
“Want to see this one?” He unbuttoned his shirt, exposing his toned chest. Musical notes with a verse from Lush’s biggest hit were inked over his heart.
This is crazy! He’s not Caesar. Why would I even consider that an option? Caesar is dead.
As she touched the tattoo, she took a deep breath, then slowly exhaled. “Well, you’ve certainly taken fanboy to a whole new level.”
He stroked the top of her hand. “How do I make you believe?”
“What is there to believe? Caesar Blue is dead.”
“True.”
“At least we agree on something.”
“Is it so hard to believe that I’m Caesar Blue?”
“We just agreed Caesar is dead.”
“Yes. I’m dead.”
Melanie yanked her hand away and scrambled to her feet. “Now you’re talking crazy. I have to go.”
“No, you don’t.” He stood as well.
“I have to meet my friends.”
“They’re not your friends. Just women you work with.”
This is getting weird. “Have you been stalking me? Is that how you know my name?”
He rubbed his head. “I have been following you. But I knew your name before then. Just like I know those girls met some guys and left with them. They want you to take an Uber home. Is that like a taxi?”
“It hasn’t even been an hour since I left them in the crowd.”
“Check your phone.”
“What?” She pulled out her phone. “There’s no message here.”
“It’s coming.”
Just then, she received notification. She was almost afraid to look.
“Go ahead. Check it.”
It was from Kristy. A message accompanied by a photo of two smiling guys.
“Do you believe me now?”
“Is this some crazy joke the three of you are pulling on me?”
He shook his head. “I don’t know them.”
“Then how did you know?”
“I have some powers.”
“Oh my God!” She huffed and began walking away. “Now you’re a superhero!”
He followed and grabbed her arm. “I’m a ghost I think. Maybe an angel? A spirit of some sort. I’m not entirely sure myself.”
She burst out laughing. “Now I’ve heard it all.”
“My powers are limited, but I can sometimes see things…actually it’s more like feel things that are going to happen.”
“Then you can see that I don’t believe you. Oh, and I’m leaving. Did you see that?”
He pouted and let her arm go. “I only see things when I try.”
“Goodbye.” She started walking again.
He stayed put and closed his eyes. “You’re going to ride home with a young man from Kenya. A college student studying medicine. He’ll tell you about your sunburn.”
She stopped and looked at her pink shoulders. “It’s sort of obvious.”
“Tell him not to take you on the highway. Keep to the backroads.”
She shook her head. This guy is certifiably insane.
“Please. I don’t want you to get hurt.”
She began walking again.
“I’ll see you again soon, Melanie.”

“Did you read the paper today?” Lana was on the other end of Shelly’s cell phone.
Frowning at her bedroom clock, she wondered if the battery had died. “Lana, am I reading the time right? Is it actually six thirty in the morning?”
“Yes, I couldn’t wait to talk to you.”
Yawning big, Shelly moaned. “What is so important that you had to wake me from my deep slumber?”
“Turn on the news.”
Shelly picked up the TV remote on her nightstand and clicked on the news. A young woman stood near a row of buildings at the end of an alleyway. She was broadcasting to a news anchor who listened attentively behind his desk in the newsroom. “Locals were drawn to the scene when an elderly woman was heard screaming. A man had just grabbed her purse when a little golden retriever caught the guy before he could get away.”
Into the phone, Shelly said, “Okay, so?”
“Wait for it,” Lana replied.
The reporter continued. “But this isn’t the only incredible part of the story. Just a few feet down this very alleyway, I encountered the son of the late CEO of Value Cinema, Johnny Henderson, Shawn Henderson himself, and apparently the proud owner of this special dog who saved the day. The late Henderson left a majority of his estate to his only child when he passed away a few weeks ago. . .” Behind the news anchor’s head, a large picture of Shawn Henderson appeared.
“Can you believe it?” Lana said.
Shelly shook her head before realizing Lana couldn’t see her. “No.”
“Incredible, isn’t it? Not only is he handsome, he’s rich and likes dogs.”
Shelly had never cared too much about money. As long as she could pay her bills, she was happy. So why should his financial status change the way she looked at him now, like he wasn’t just a mystery man, but an unattainable mystery man?
Shelly said, “I’ll talk to you later, okay? I’m going to finish sleeping.”
As she lay back on her pillow, she tried to puzzle out her changing thoughts about Shawn: wonder, confusion, awe.
Shelly knew a little bit about Johnny Henderson, that he’d acquired massive wealth through his enterprise over the years, making him a billionaire. On the TV, the reporter was exchanging an exclaimed expression with the news anchor over Shawn Henderson’s newfound status.
“Now, Mr. Henderson is no longer a millionaire, but a billionaire, folks,” she announced.
A millionaire already? He didn’t strike her as someone with money. He seemed so. . .nice and simple.
“Well, now, that’s a shallow thought. Millionaires can be nice and simple too.”
She sat up, unable to go back to sleep. She switched off the TV and turned on the one in the living room, adjacent to the kitchen, where she pulled out a package of uncooked bacon and a carton of eggs and set about cooking both in the same pan. She liked the blended flavor of grease and yolk. But her mind strayed to what she’d just learned.
Would a billionaire be just as nice? She laughed, feeling ridiculous. He already had money, far more than she’d ever made. Perhaps she lacked imagination, but what did he do to make his money? Invest it? Get a six-figure job right out of high school? She stirred the food, listening to it sizzle and pop over the high flame.
“I’ll have to ask him when I see him again.” She laughed again. “Right, like it’s any of my business.”
“Our very own Billionaire Bachelor.” Shelly whirled from the stove. The reporter winked at the camera as she finished her report.
Now, why should what she said bother Shelly? Shawn didn’t belong to her. They didn’t have a commitment. Nevertheless, thrusting that title upon him bothered her. She wondered if Shawn had seen the news yet, and if it bothered him too.

| Back Issues (Burn Outs #1) by Dani Hermit & Curtis Star |
|
|

Several years past 50, Matt thought that his days as a Villain in the staged Chosen fights were long over.
But then his powers returned in the wake of a devastating attack that took the powers of all the active Chosen, perpetrated by a young Hero.
With no other choice, Matt goes to the one man who might understand what is happening to him – Colton. The man who was Matt’s main rival back in the days of his fighting career. A man Matt hasn’t seen since the day he burned out and walked away from the fights.
That would be complicated enough. But back then, they were also secret lovers. Matt walked away from that as well without a goodbye.
Now after nearly twenty five years, these two men are coming face to face for the first time. Can they handle their personal issues while trying to save the world from a Hero gone bad?
Targeted Age Group:: 18+
What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
We have been talking about wanting to write something with older superheroes for years. The actual story idea is a combination of getting obsessed with Umbrella Academy & My Hero Academia at about the same time, with the added musical inspiration of the album "Ghost of Ohio" by Andy Black. The finishing piece of the world building was actually an episode of Ancient Aliens that featured sacred disks. All of that went into our heads and out came the Burn Outs series.
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
For the main couple of Matt and Colton, the idea was "what would Deku & Kacchan from My Hero Academia be like in their 50s? And what if they lost their powers along the way and then suddenly had them back?" From there, we drew inspiration from several other characters from MHA and other shows we were obsessed with to make the base of our characters, and they evolved from there into the wild cast of loveable messes that they are today.
Book Sample
It’s really late, Matt realized.
He had spent a long time after talking to Thomas standing on the bottom stair leading up to Boris’s apartment. The other two men had left to find food, promising to try and give Matt the time he needed to make things right with Colton. But now that he was on his own, Matt wasn’t sure that was something that could happen. What he had done was unforgivable. He had turned something sexy and sacred into a weapon. He had used what he knew about Colton to manipulate and hurt him. He shouldn’t go anywhere near Colton again.
But he had to. He really did. Colton was trapped inside of his own body, of that Matt was certain. The only person who might be able to circumvent Mythos and bring Colton back was him. Boris was a stranger and Thomas didn’t have it in him. Especially not after what happened in the underground chambers while he was under Blue Bolt’s control.
Matt knew that they were going to have to talk about that later. Not so much what Thomas did, but how in the hell had a lightning user controlled them like that? It made no sense in relation to his powers. Something was off, but Matt couldn’t put a finger on it yet.
He began to climb the stairs. He had no idea what was waiting for him. Was Mythos awake and on the warpath? Would he even still be here if he were awake? Could it be that Colton was back and waiting for him? Or had he destroyed any chance of reconciling their relationship with his actions?
There were too many questions and nowhere near enough answers.
Pausing again halfway up, Matt took several deep breaths. The night was quiet and cool. He wasn’t going to forget what he did, but he might be able to get past it for a while. That was all he needed.
An hour, maybe two of clear-thinking, confident Matt. Of remembering what he used to be to Colton. Remembering what he had not been since the day he burned out and walked away from everything. Though he loved the games they played of dominance and submission, Matt had never been interested in taking on the role of dom to anyone else.
It was something special with Colton and he just couldn’t consider it even when he tried to move on and have other relationships. He feared he was tragically out of practice.
Forcing himself to let go of the not at all helpful thoughts, Matt finished walking up the stairs and with only a moment’s hesitation opened the door. Inside was even more quiet than outside. But the single light was still on, and he could clearly see that Colton was awake. He was sitting up and wrapped in the blanket. His back was against the wall where Matt had held him pinned not an hour ago.
Matt closed the door and made his way across the room, doing all he could not to look at the growing bruises around Colton’s neck in the shape of his hands.

| Yolk’s on Me by Destiny Henderson |
|
|

Mauve, the daughter of an actress and a circus-clown, is eager to impress the popular kids at her high school. Her futile attempt to dazzle them with juggling eggs ends with actual yolk on her face. But when she gets invited to an influencer-star studded event, Mauve believes it will be an opportunity to redeem herself. Unfortunately, the party doesn’t go as she had hoped. Mauve learns that while the spotlight is fun, everything doesn’t have to be a performance.
Targeted Age Group:: 13 to 18
What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I always have random story ideas, phrases, and scenes spinning around in my head. During winter break, I got the idea of a girl juggling eggs and getting yolk on her face. The name came instantly. “Yolk’s on Me” is short, cute, and punny. Now, why would a character be juggling eggs in the first place came next. As a joke? A secret skill? Or, for attention? The outcome of all this brainstorming is this story. In addition, I enjoy writing lighthearted stories with black leads. I tried to tease in a message of self-discovery as well.
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
Mauve, the main character, was easy to create. I knew only a character with a big personality could carry this story. I also knew "colors" would play a role as well, so I chose to name her after a shade of purple.
For the rest of characters, something I love is when people aren't just black and white or stereotypical, especially young adults. While I did want to create the quintessential popular kids, I wanted them to have depth. No one is "just" a jock or a mean girl. I hope I have created characters any reader can root for.

Even with literal egg on my face, yolk dribbling down my chin, the most shameful thing is she was right.
As usual, I’m optimistic, foolish, and oh so stupid. Maybe the yellow yolk can fertilize my skin, grow me into something less desperate to please. I doubt it.
Brenda, the nicest one in the group, flashes me a quick half-smile. It’s pained and fleeting, but it’s an act of comfort to wipe away a bit of the embarrassment. She’s student body president, so it makes sense she has to be nice to everyone. Brenda uncrosses her legs and reaches inside her purse presumably for a napkin.
There is still heavy chattering around the rest of the lunch tables. People are rushing into the cafeteria, trying to find their friends, fondling bags of chips notoriously full-of-air with salty fingers, and smacking, lots of mouths smacking.
Even with all the noise, I can only hear my heartbeat. I kick at one of the cracked eggshells near my foot absentmindedly. I was all set for today, color-coordinated from head to toe in purple like my namesake. Thankfully, the gooey yellow running down my head compliments my purple dress and sneakers.
“Well, ta-dah.” I jump up and fling my arms out. “That’s my trick. You all get the point. I was supposed to catch them, but yolk’s on me,” I speak first, smiling big. Who knew three eggs could cause this much damage? I guess those chickies got their revenge after all.
My daddy is an expert juggler, and he has been teaching me how to juggle three items at once. My sweaty hands fumbled the eggs today, so, despite all my lessons, I still looked like an amateur. When the first egg cracked atop my forehead, some yolk slid into my eye and momentarily blinded me. After that, the other two eggs hit my cheek and hair.
Brenda’s friends don’t mask their indifference—not even Dawn who God knows would be entertained by paint drying. In less than a minute flat, they are already talking about some party. A girl from English class is having her birthday party at a movie theater. Her mom’s a big-deal influencer, so she pulled some strings and got an advanced copy of the new Zombie Bats movie. It’s the twenty-fourth in the series, and I swear the storyline gets stupider with each one, but it’s still the action movie to see. The whole movie theater’s going to be reserved for her guests. Figures. Other people get all the attention from knowing someone else while I bust my butt only to end up looking stupid

| Ted Bundy: Examining The Unconfirmed Survivor Stories by Erin Banks |
|
|

“Ted Bundy: Examining The Unconfirmed Survivor Stories,” is the first publication to collate the known and often discussed stories of those individuals who shared their encounters with Ted Bundy decades after the execution of the serial killer. It compares these reports with data compiled by investigators, psychologists and contemporaries of Ted Bundy, as found in police files, psychological assessments and relevant literature.
Includes thorough investigations into the accounts of “Blondie” singer Debbie Harry, Rhonda Stapley, Sara A. Survivor, Sotria Kritsonis, as well as numerous other unconfirmed survivors.
Features the self-debunked story of a woman who had previously believed to be a Ted Bundy survivor.
Delves into the possible motivations of deliberate and indeliberate victim-players, as well as Dr. Elizabeth Loftus’ discoveries of the malleability of human memory.
Erin Banks, who was mentored by Ted Bundy expert Kevin M. Sullivan, previously contributed a chapter to the author’s sixth book on the case, “The Enigma Of Ted Bundy: The Questions And Controversies Surrounding America’s Most Infamous Serial Killer.”
Targeted Age Group:: 18+
What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
When I set out to study Ted Bundy in 2016, I noticed that in recent years more and more women (and fewer men) had come forth to share their unconfirmed survivor stories with the public. They had not reported their Ted Bundy encounters to the police but had contacted the media instead. I was curious to learn more about their stories, their motivations to speak up now and to find out whether their accounts could be either verified or debunked when comparing it with all available data compiled by investigators, psychologists and authors over the years.

"Debbie Harry, lead singer of the punk-pop band “Blondie,” is adamant that Bundy attempted to abduct her in “the early 70’s.” Although she had remained firm about this statement since the late 1980’s, a recent 2020 interview now quotes her as saying that the event took place in 1970 sharp. Harry also mentions that this incident occurred long before she was active in any band.
Her story took place in the late evening hours in New York City’s Village neighborhood. Harry attempted to hail a cab to head to an after-hours club.
According to Harry, a little white car pulled up next to her after circling the block several times. The driver finally stopped to offer her a ride, remaining persistent until she relented. Upon climbing into the passenger seat, she immediately noticed his foul body odor.
She is quoted as saying that was aware of how unbearably hot it was inside the vehicle. It was then that Harry observed that all of the windows were rolled up despite the heat of the summer evening. When she moved to roll down the window, Harry realized that there was no inside door handle in the car, and that the entire back of the car was stripped out. There were no back seats, no panels, nothing.
When Bundy allegedly noticed that Harry had rolled down the window and was trying to reach the outer door handle to escape, he violently yanked the car around to turn a corner. Possibly to have her slam back into the passenger seat. Instead Harry was catapulted from the car and Bundy simply kept driving, leaving her behind on the asphalt.
Approximately fifteen years later, Harry saw footage of Bundy on television and realized that he had been the man who nearly abducted her.
There’s already a problem with the year(s) given, because…"

I fished the last coins out of my purse and paid the parking meter. That was it. I was officially broke. All I had left now was a bit of money on a credit card, which didn’t count because credit never belonged to anyone.
“You know, Julia, if you handle your money better you’re not going to end up with no cash at the end of the month,” Brian pointed out.
“Yeah, thanks captain obvious. What am I supposed to do?”
He chuckled and laced his fingers through mine. I let him hold my hand for all of two seconds before I wormed my way out of his grip. We were close and all, and we fucked now and then, but we weren’t at holding hands. Not by a long shot.
“You’re supposed to not drink out all the cash you make when you waitress.”
I rolled my eyes. “I’m a student. You’re telling me I should just say no every Thursday at Fiasco?”
He thought about it for a moment before he shook his head. “No, you’re right. No one’s going to give up half-price shooters. You’ll just have to get a better job.”
“Doing what? The reason I’m studying is so that I can get a better job. No one takes Accounting for shits and giggles, and no one is going to make a mil before a degree.”
“Why don’t you ask your dad? Aren’t your parents loaded?”
I shook my head, irritated. I should never have told Brian about my parents in the first place. They didn’t count in my life and no matter how bad things got, there was no way in hell I was turning to them for help.
“You know that’s not happening.”
“I get you’re pissed at them. I don’t know why, but I get it. But you can use them for money at least, can’t you? It’s like… the ultimate revenge.”
I rolled my eyes at him. “It doesn’t work that way. And I don’t want to talk about them anymore.”
He shrugged and we walked into the Gap. He nodded a greeting at one of the girls standing in line.
“That?” I asked, nodding towards her. “You did that?”
“Come on, she’s hot.”
I looked at her again. Short red bob, freckles, soft around the middle… no.
“I’m starting to wonder what you see in me if that’s what you choose for your main course.”
He shook his head. Brian and I had an easy kind of relationship. Nothing steady, nothing exclusive, he could do whatever he liked, with whoever he liked, I could do the same. The fact that he got way more ass than I was beside the point. I preferred to keep things classy – I wasn’t just going to jump whoever came along just because they were willing. I had standards. Besides, I didn’t just keep myself in peak condition to give it away to the first asshole that bought me a drink.
Brian aside. He’d been the first asshole to buy me a drink when I’d just gotten here.
But we were friends now. All’s well that ends well, or some shit.
My lay had to be an asshole with a six-pack, at least. Or even better, a six-figure income. I ran five miles three times a week and did a hell of a work-out the days in between to get an ass like mine and keep it. The guy had to do something along those lines to be worth my while.
“What are we here for, again?” he asked.
“Jeans. Or slacks. Or socks. Whatever I can still afford if this card isn’t maxed out.”
When I got home I was empty-handed and grumpy. Brian had left which meant no sex tonight.
“What’s wrong with you?” Myra asked when I walked in. We’d been roommates for two years and she carried most of the rent when I was out of cash, which was most of the time.
I’d been lucky to find a place to live at all. I’d seen her ad when I’d been kicked out of my dorm room. We’d had an interview where I’d arrived with everything I owned already in my car, and I’d moved in right away.
She was a better person than I was. I didn’t know if I would have taken me in.
“You know, the usual.”
“Aww, Brian not in the mood to do anything tonight?” she asked. By ‘anything’ she meant me. I took off my shoe and threw it at her. My sock had a hole and that made me depressed.
I sat down on the couch next to her. She always looked like a supermodel. She had the build for it, tall and skinny and she didn’t need to watch her diet the way I did. When I’d asked her once how she stayed so perfect, she’d answered ‘lots of sex’. Right. Then why didn’t I look like that?
She wore a black silk robe and it looked like it was all she was wearing. Her blond hair was tied up in a knot on her head and I noticed she was already wearing make-up.
“Why are you all dressed up?” I asked.
“I have a date tonight,” she said and pouted her lips at me.
“Another one?”
She shrugged. “I don’t set the dates, they do.”
Myra was an escort. She told me so the first time we’d met but it was a life she kept away from the apartment. All I knew about it was that she always looked damn good and she had expensive shit that I wanted. Her clothes were all designer labels and one pair of heels cost more than all my clothes together.
“What are you going to wear?” I asked.
“Want to help me pick?” she asked and got up, walking to her room. I followed her, trying to mimic the way she swayed her hips when she walked, feeling like I looked dumb instead. I sat down on her bed and she picked out four dresses. She held them up in front of her.
“That one,” I said, pointing at a golden dress that looked like it wouldn’t fit it was that small. She held it at arm’s length and looked at it with a tipped head.
“You think so?”
“It makes your hair awesome,” I said. She nodded, letting the robe fall to her ankles. I was wrong, she wasn’t wearing absolutely nothing underneath, but it was damn close.
