How is Writing In Your Genre Different from Others?
In the paranormal genre you can write about scenarios that would not be feasible normally. Mythological creatures, from either someone else’s or your own creation, are only limited by your, and your reader’s, imagination.

What Advice Would You Give Aspiring Writers?
It’s tempting to give up when you have a bad review, or negative feedback, but at the end of it all you’re not writing the novel for those that don’t like it; you’re writing it for the readers that do. Take on board constructive criticism, and improve if you can, but don’t let it stop you from writing the novel you would want to read.

Author Bio:
Catherine Gardiner was born and raised next to rolling green meadows in Yorkshire, England where she resides with her beloved border collie. When she is not writing she is either researching for her upcoming novels, taking photographs, cooking or going for long leisurely walks along a nearby river. She first conceived the idea for her novels when she was doing a creative writing course in college and had to walk home alone through a wood where she often imagined what might be in the shadows. She also thinks her love of writing and her passion for all things creative is due to her Irish roots.

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
The first novels that gave me a passion for reading were from the Point Horror, Fear Street, and Nightworld series in the 90s. When I initially thought of my story, I knew that it had more in common with the books I used to read than the books I find myself reading now and so I ended up setting my novel partially in that time period, as a homage.

How is Writing In Your Genre Different from Others?
I wanted Dinosaurs & Cherry Stems to read, as if one friend was confiding her experiences to another, over a hot cup of coffee or a crisp glass of Chardonnay. So far, my reviews have conveyed this style of conversational writing has been pretty successful, which makes me very happy.

True, the genre of my story is humorous romance, but the story reads as if the character was speaking directly to the current reader. My readers can relate, or so I’ve been told.

What Advice Would You Give Aspiring Writers?
Put a leash on your muse and distance yourself from distractions during your writing sessions. I try to write everyday, but life intrudes and writing every single day is sometimes not an option. Just be true to that crazy buzz going on inside your brain, the one that compels you to get the words flowing, and then get going. The words will add up, even though it sometimes seems your current WIP will never be completed!

Author Bio:
There aren’t enough minutes in a day to get everything I wish to accomplish with my prose, so I’m hoping to return in my next life as a literary octopus! I’m furiously penning the sequel to Dinosaurs and Cherry Stems, my humorous, contemporary romance about achieving mid-life adolescence. I call this sequel, The Sugar Ticket, and I’m hoping to launch it late spring/early summer 2013. I’m also revising a contemporary drama, Slick Trespass, and a children’s book, Savannah Banana and the Puddle Muddle–look for these late 2013!

My eBook, Heart Marks the Spot: Three Short Stories, can also be found right now on Amazon for Kindle, as well as a cook book I contributed to called, Dine With Us: A Collection of Recipes from the Authors of Indie Writers Unite. Lot’s of yummy recipes and delicious stories can be found here, so don’t miss out!

My sometimes controversial rants have appeared in my local newspaper, the Asbury Park Press, and I’m proud to share I’ve won several awards via the Writer’s Digest 78th Annual Writer’s Contest and the Philadelphia Writer’s Conference. My nonfiction articles have appeared in Parenting Teen Magazine, Aim Intercultural Magazine, and Good Dog Magazine.

My husband, Joseph, and I live in a lovely town in New Jersey near the sea. Together we have seven children and nine grandchildren.

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I wanted to write a humorous tale of a recovered divorcee who lands in an unexpected, sometimes turbulent, midlife relationship. I wanted to further shape the story into part dating guide for those trying online dating for the first time, especially during middle age, and how we can make our baggage work for us instead of against us.

I actually shared some real life experiences and spun some embellishments in with the truth. Most of all, I wanted to send a message to others going through similar situations there is hope to be had, even when the future seems bleak. Further, I wanted my readers to be able to laugh at my character’s hilarious, but avoidable situations, and to applaud her as she gains practical wisdom from the past, ‘ from her memory cemetery’ as she calls it.

Targeted Age Group:

How is Writing In Your Genre Different from Others?
As I mention before, inventing words is one of my favorite things about writing. This works best in the fantasy genre obviously, as I can make up words, bring back old words and combine words to create a new meaning. While writing Ill-fated, I tried to invent words that sound like what they are, but with a poetic touch. For a long time, I kept a journal of words I just liked the sound of, and then paired them up with other words to create names for things like types of trees, flowers, potions, or places.

A few of my favorite invented words were: Idlerile for a stream and roughrunnel for a river, moonbloom for phosphorescence, dayspell and nightspell, for trees and plants I like: gingerburn, sallow trees, poppyglums, and rosedeads. For places, my favorites were: the Fiercehollows, the Iron Spine, and Deadroamer.

What Advice Would You Give Aspiring Writers?
I’ve been reading a lot of indie-authors lately and have to say the one thing that makes me the most depressed about self-publishing is the total lack of regard authors have for their own work (and the English Language). I know most indie writers are not English majors, and no one expects them to be, but if you can’t edit your own book properly, then find someone who will. Your story deserves it!

Author Bio:
The plaque on Mrs. Ink’s lawn reads the Edgington Mansion, it was once thought to be lovely, though now rather decrepit and certainly full of secrets. She lives here with her husband. He is a philosopher, and said to be quite mad. According to Mrs. Ink their house is full of books, “Stacked, piled, and always advancing out and away from the shelves that ought to keep them in.” She paints and draws, writes and reads, and occasionally goes down into the dark, dismal, cobweb-creepy dungeon, to do laundry.

Evelyn Ink is the author of the YA fantasy novel Ill-fated and the children’s trilogy Sticks, Stones, and Dragon Bones. She was formally trained to be a parachutist, but found it did not fit her longstanding desire to avoid heights and thus decided to study the much less vertically horrifying subject of English Literature.

If interested, you may choose to follow Mrs. Ink on her blog or check in with her on facebook. However, due to her absolute terror of electronics and a crippling phobia of the social media (technical term: Socmephobia), her blog posts tend to be infrequent and erratic. Also, due to several post exile investigations she is generally prevented from giving any specific information regarding her whereabouts…

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I find reading inspires writing; it’s a vicious cycle and there is no escape. This book was specifically inspired by the books/films Stardust and The Princess Bride, and also the Foundling Tale series by D.M. Cornish; who is a king of words and invention (Inventing words was one of my favorite things about writing this book). Writing is often inspired by a single idea, in this case the single idea was Leila’s invisible shackles. The drudge bindings that grow heavier the farther away she walks, keeping her trapped by the Hexman. It’s funny to think about now, because it turned out to be such a tiny part of the whole story.

What Advice Would You Give Aspiring Writers?
I always encourage other writers to read, read, read. The more information we have in our mental idea pool we fish our inspirations from, and the more voice and styles we have floating around, the greater our own work will naturally be!

Author Bio:
Lloyd Matthew Thompson was raised in a strict religious household, the oldest of nine children. He has since explored, experienced, and been shaped by many other pathways, including Buddhism, Shamanism, Paganism, and New Age. Whether writing, painting, drawing or teaching, reflections of all these can be found in his work.

He has written for various metaphysical and holistic blogs and magazines, both locally and globally. He is presently working on a fiction series entitled The Energy Anthology, and his future plans include many other stories, nonfiction, and a series based on the Tarot.

Lloyd currently lives in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, with his wife, triplets, daughter who thinks she is a cat, and cat who thinks she is a daughter.

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
My Energy Anthology has grown from a desire to write stories illustrating each metaphysical chakra in the body. Each story is separate in its own, yet still interconnected with all the others.

How is Writing In Your Genre Different from Others?
I tend to mix in other genres. This book is as every bit science fiction as paranormal as mystery as it is romance.

What Advice Would You Give Aspiring Writers?
Persistence! Never give up writing if you love it!

Author Bio:
Gary Starta is a former journalist who studied English and Journalism at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst.

His love for science fiction compelled him to write his first novel What Are You Made Of? published in 2006. Inspired by Isaac Asimov, the science fiction novel focuses on intelligent artificial life and whether sentient androids should possess the same rights as humans. The androids in Starta’s novel are created as hybrids – part machine, part human – further blurring the line between human and machine. Starta foresees a near future where humans will be forced to decide if intelligent machinery is indeed a life form. Possibly, in this near future, some humans will possess computer enhancements to overcome disabilities becoming hybrids themselves. The line between biological life form and mechanical life form continues to be examined in 2010’s Gods of the Machines.

Demon Inhibitions along with its preceding Caitlin Diggs (series) novels, Extreme Liquidation and Blood Web are reminiscent of the The X-files television/movie series. Contemporary authors Laurell K. Hamilton, Rachel Caine, Jim Butcher and Kelly Armstrong also fuel his aspiration to create paranormal suspense.

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
A love for paranormal crime fiction. I was curious to see what would happen if a real person, Aleister Crowley, reputedly the world’s wickedest man came back from the dead. Could a reincarnated Crowley wreak havoc for selfish gains? Could FBI agents resist black magic and stop a supernatural force? Political chaos, fringe science and magic make for a supernatural thriller with top notch FBI Agent Caitlin Diggs as the protagonist.

Author Bio:
Karen A. Wyle was born a Connecticut Yankee, but moved every few years throughout her childhood and adolescence. After college in California, law school in Massachusetts, and a mercifully short stint in a large San Francisco law firm, she moved to Los Angeles, where she met her now-husband, who hates L.A. They eventually settled in Bloomington, Indiana, home of Indiana University.

Wyle’s childhood ambition was to be the youngest ever published novelist. While writing her first novel at age ten, she was mortified to learn that some British upstart had beaten her to the goal at age nine.

Wyle has been a voracious and compulsive reader as long as she can remember. Do not strand this woman on a plane without reading matter! Wyle was an English and American Literature major at Stanford University, which suited her, although she has in recent years developed some doubts about whether studying literature is, for most people, a good preparation for enjoying it. Her most useful preparation for writing novels, besides reading them, has been the practice of appellate law — in other words, writing large quantities of persuasive prose, on deadline, year after year.

Wyle and her husband have two intensely creative daughters, the older of whom introduced Wyle to National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo), for which she will be forever grateful.

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
An abiding interest in themes of family communication and reconciliation, and the realization that one could create an afterlife that would assist in those processes.

Author Bio:
I am Alaric Longward, a dad, a husband and an aspiring writer.

I remember sitting on my grandma’s frazzled couch, staring doggedly at an old Tarzan movie. I must have been some six years old and her TV was black and white. I also remember being both scared out of my young wits and excited as puppy about to be fed.

I suppose that was the time I fell in love with furious adventure stories, all spiced up with love and drama, villainous villains and heroes, though in time I came to appreciate that the characters should not all be as black and white as that Tarzan movie was.

It quickly became a dream of mine to get my stories out, but it took a long while for me to take the time to do so. Yet, here I am, finally.

I create fiction, fantasy, adventure and drama. They won’t be short stories, but full blown books and might require some time to finish. I hope you enjoy them and would love to hear your feedback.

Still, I wonder . . . did she know?

The Warden Threat begins a humorous science fiction parody of epic fantasy adventure stories—an anti-fantasy book that pokes some good-natured fun at the serious tone and dependence on magic common to many epic fantasy adventure genre novels. There are no dragons here, but there are some androids.

This is the story of Prince Donald of Westgrove. He is the idealistic third son of the king, and he comes to believe that he may be the only one able to protect his country from an invasion spearheaded by an ancient and massive magical stone warrior known as the Warden of Mystic Defiance.

Donald, unfortunately, is woefully unprepared. His only real understanding of such things comes from his reading of adventure stories. When he finds an ancient scroll he believes may allow him to take control of the mysterious Warden, he eagerly takes on the task. He dreams of saving the kingdom and becoming a hero like those in his books.

To his dismay, his quest turns out to be nothing like he imagined. He finds the stories in his library seriously understate the complexities and hardships involved. He also soon realizes that the real world can be much more confusing than fictional ones. Things may not be as they first appear, and the hero is not necessarily predestined to save the day.

The Warden Threat, the first book in this epic tale, is currently available in all digital formats free from Smashwords. It can also be found on Amazon in both paperback and Kindle formats for a nominal cost.

If you are an avid reader of fantasy and science fiction who yearns for something fresh and different, this may be just what you are looking for.

About the Book
The year is 2045. Ann, a high-powered executive, working in an Artificial Intelligence International, is at the pinnacle of success. That is, until strange and elusive images begin to haunt her nights, slowly spilling into her days. The robotic companion she created leads her to a startling conclusion…these disturbing images may be whispers and screams from her past lives. With her scientific background, Ann is skeptical, but a visit to an ancient psychic plunges her into a cruel and primitive world before recorded time. She begins to experience this brutal landscape through her own eyes, even feeling the pain of childbirth and the savage murder of her primordial companion. Shaken by the image, Ann comes face-to-face with Michael, a handsome, mysterious stranger who seems to know far more than he should about Ann’s harrowing mental state. Fearing she is losing her grip on reality, Ann slips further into her nightmare world, interacting with Roman Emperor Caligula, Louis XIV and a Soviet spy syndicate during World War II. Only the mysterious Michael holds the stunning truth that will save Ann from her visions, and propel her to an even more amazing future.

About the Book
What is our resistance to change? It is our limiting beliefs held in the subconscious mind that sabotage what we want. We can not conquer new frontiers by interpreting facts and explaining reasons for unwanted behaviors and outcomes, but by finding the mechanism to change them. And that’s what Rewired is all about.
The secret weapon to changing patterns of thinking, habits, and even outcomes is accomplished by attacking the obstacle at the appropriate place: our limiting belief. By identifying the limiting belief as the root of resistance to change, we break free from static thinking and power up our performance, relationships and purpose. This opens the door to new frontiers and great gains.
