About the Book
Slaughtering Girl is the story of a woman who knows how to use a cleaver. It is an exploration of the Chinese proverb “To hit is to kiss, to curse is to love (打是亲骂是爱).” It is a tale of sex, violence, Jews, China, politics, passion, and mahjongg.
The story begins on the day in 1908 when news of the death of the Empress Dowager reaches the town of Two Trees. The eight year old Slaughtering Girl works beside Grandmother Chen to kill enough fowl for the celebration. Certainly there is no child more skilled with a cleaver but her grandmother wonders what she is destined to do with this gift.
If you are interested in Chinese history, culture, or politics, this book is for you. If you like the following authors, you might enjoy this book: Pearl Buck (The Good Earth; Peony), Jung Chang (Wild Swans), Gunter Grass (The Tin Drum), Erich Maria Remarque (The Black Oblisk), Jerzy Kosinski (The Painted Bird).
The book is free on Amazon through Saturday April 18.
The author can be contacted at slaughteringgirl@gmail.com
Mr. Sultan’s first novel, Slaughtering Girl, reflects the author’s deep love of Chinese history and culture as well as his Jewish heritage. He has traveled widely in China and speaks Chinese, although no one will mistake him for being fluent. Prior to his career as a writer, Mr. Sultan enjoyed a long career as an engineer, the final six years of which he worked for a Chinese company. Readers are invited to join the author’s blog at www.easterntales.wordpress.com.
The idea for Slaughtering Girl came from the observation of a young girl in a poultry market in the city of Kunming, China. The girl was, perhaps, eight years old and she was responsible for the slaughter, plucking, and dressing of the live ducks and chickens purchased by customers. The author was fascinated by the sight of this little girl and the carnage she created. The author wondered what such a girl would be like as she grew to adulthood

Wiraqucha, the creator god, loves and will not destroy the people and empire he has created, so he appoints others to watch over his creations while he continues his explorations of the heavens and the earth. After one hundred years, his appointed custodians must return to their home in the sky, leaving the people of the Wira Empire without the daily presence of those they believe protect them.
In accordance with this and other prophesies, and almost all at once, the Wira Empire loses their sun god, Inti, who succumbs to the ravages of the human form as Wiraqucha plans to flood the village in order to protect it as a place of rest for his future visits.
Pascac, son of Inti, leads villagers to safety in Sacsayhuamán, the sanctuary overlooking Qusqu—the capital city built by the god of civilization, Manqu Qhapaq. Despite their will to live and prosper, those things may not be within the grasp of the new settlers. Supay, the god of death, and other gods rage against them—seemingly intent upon wiping out the entire civilization and those who rule them.
Through it all, the scribe, one of only a few who knows the ancient art of glyph drawing, endures hardship and tragedy to fulfill her life’s purpose of recording history and creating books for the Wira descendants so they will know the story of how they came to be.
Cyndie Shaffstall’s new historical fiction is based upon the legends of Peru’s Wira and Inca gods and the theories of modern-day ancient astronaut theorists concerning their origins. You will be transported through the ages to join the villagers in the trials and tribulations of establishing their new home in the sanctuary on the hill.

Courtney Hamilton is a Velveeta-loving attorney driven to distraction by a city that seethes with soul-sucking status seekers. When her friend Marcie formulates an impossibly detailed rating system for acceptable men—the Los Angeles Eco-Chain of Dating—Courtney goes on a self-destructive binge that doesn’t stop until she gets thrown out of group therapy for insulting a former child actress.
Courtney is mortified as she watches her best friends give up stellar careers in law and the arts to marry entertainment royalty and civilian overachievers. Worse, they expect Courtney to do the same. So they hatch plots to get her to give up her career, break her addiction to fake cheese, marry into high-orbit wealth and rule the stratosphere alongside them.
But Courtney resists. She doesn’t want to be a poster child for the Opt-Out Generation. And she certainly doesn’t want to be molded into date bait for the top rung of L.A. society. All Courtney wants is to be left alone so she can search beneath the surface for a meaningful life. But between a meddling, narcissistic mother, a self-absorbed therapist and friends trying to send her to dating re-education camps, it seems that fake cheese is the only genuine thing left in the city. Social ambition combats self-actualization in this biting tale of one woman’s search for certainty in a city full of mirages.
Author Bio:
Courtney Hamilton has worked in Hollywood with writers, directors, executive producers, actresses and actors in the entertainment industry in L.A., Las Vegas and New York, including Golden Globe and Emmy winners in television and feature films (particularly in the humorous fiction, humor romance and women’s fiction genres). Based in Los Angeles, California, Hamilton is a keen observer of L.A. Royalty and southern California society (which many consider a romantic fiction of its own). Almost Royalty is a fictionalized satire of Los Angeles social classes and especially those who aspire to be part of the city’s A-Level Royalty.
Sit. Read. Have some Velveeta. Enjoy. Laugh.
