During the late Sixties, I worked in a number of hospitals as an aide or orderly. Two of them were world famous: McLean Hospital, Belmont, Massachusetts; and the Massachusetts General Hospital, in downtown Boston. Two were in Toronto. They were my first full time jobs.

I saw incredible things, people and incidents that have stayed with me all these years: the managed blood of surgery, the chaos of emergency, tense moments in a mental ward.

These are human-interest stories, with a smattering of medical terms, where appropriate. It’s about what happened in the hospital and outside the hospital during a turbulent period in history. I learned about life and death in hospitals, which has tempered my understanding of the world ever since. Approximately 17,000 words. I am a published poet and author, produced playwright in New York City, digital artist, and wilderness canoeist.

Sam was standing by his car door smiling proudly as I pulled in behind him. He hadn’t bothered to open the triple garage. I couldn’t see the neighbors’ house for the trees but I could hear the sound of a running river and the neighing of horses. I shut off the engine and got out. “You looking for a gardener?” I asked, flabbergasted.

“No, he isn’t, but he had better be looking for an undertaker,” my Guardian Angel yelled in a way I knew he was not kidding. I darted toward Sam, hoping to knock him to the ground, but before I reached him a shot belched from the trees. The bullet entered the right side of Sam’s head. For a brief moment there was a look of bewilderment in his eyes and then acceptance, as if getting killed was a relief. As Sam’s body slid down the side of the new Lincoln, leaving a trail of blood on the shiny white paint, I knew I should have listened to my Guardian Angel.

“I told you, I told you,” my Guardian Angel screeched.

There was another shot. The bullet sang a death song as it buzzed over my head. I sprawled on top of Sam, which was about as smart as trying to stop a runaway train with my hand, since Sam was as dead as dead can be.

After a few moments and no more shots, I quickly checked Sam’s pants pockets and took a key from his front right pocket. In his shirt pocket was a folded up piece of paper. I stuffed both the key and the piece of paper into my Levi’s pocket.

The next thing I knew, a very attractive lady was standing over Sam and screaming. “Oh Sam!! Why? Why?”

I grabbed her hand and yanked her to the ground. I didn’t know who she was or how she got here so fast, but in the instant it took to yank her down I noticed the fine female form molded into one of the briefest string bikini’s I had ever seen. People will tell you being close to death can heighten your senses. That may or may not be true, but the lady was gorgeous and the bikini she was wearing wasn’t made to leave many tan lines. The lady started bawling. There was nothing I could do to help the woman. I am a stranger to women. I am not a stranger to death. I learned one thing in the war, there is no guarantee about this life thing – the reaper takes you when he wants.

About the Author:
David grew up in the north east of England, where he went on to study English Literature at The University of Sunderland. After graduating, he started to write his first fictional stories, but always felt that to become a truly accomplished writer he would need to significantly broaden his horizons. Therefore, just days after his 27th birthday, he bought a one-way ticket to Sydney, Australia.
He spent 2 years in the land down under and travelled through every far flung corner of the country, earning his keep by taking up jobs doing everything from pruning grape vines to driving tractors. He has been writing like a mad man ever since.
All of David’s novels are inspired to some extent by his own travels and he writes the kind of books that he would want to read. Far too impatient to spend months waiting for impersonal rejections from literary agents, he decided to publish his work himself. Ultimately, he just wants people to enjoy reading his books as much as he enjoys writing them.
All of his novels are written in standard British English.

Author Bio:
While majoring in art in high school – yeah, they let us do that at Prospect Heights H.S. in Brooklyn, with nude models, too, I realized that the creative juices were flowing in a different direction: science fiction and fantasy writing. One evening when there was nothing good on TV, I took pen in hand and wrote a short science fiction story titled: The Aliens. “Well,” said I, “that wasn’t so hard,” having no idea how poorly written it really was, and how skewed was the science in the fiction. But it launched me into a love of writing and a passion to become the best writer possible.

Author Bio:
J.M. Hushour was born, as writers often are. He will also die, as writers almost always do. Before then, he plans to write more novels and learn how to appreciate the novelty of the edible parachute.
He lives near Seattle,a fine writer’s city.
He is the author of The Poem-Skull and Weatherhead. He is concurrently writing the follow-up to The Poem-Skull, titled The Invocations, and a science fiction novel best described as “Groundhog Day Meets The Book of Revelations”.
