Here’s the bottom line… I love to laugh, I love to drink and I love to eat.
I also love writing.
As a child I had stories going through my head. It took me a long time to realise I should write them down, therefore clearing my mind. Little did I know another one would pop up!
I wanted to be painter since I was a child. I was told, while being assessed at the end of my art foundation, I should go into drama or be a stand-up comedian. I’m short, so even if I did ‘stand up’ it’d be hard to see me and I realise that was their way of telling me I was rubbish at art.
I’ve worked in various jobs and I have been extremely lucky to do what I wanted to do… though I have a habit of changing my mind every so often.
If you want something, go for it. The only thing holding you back is you. You only have one life so don’t say ‘if only’ say ‘well at least I tried’.
Writing, like anything creative, is an exposure. Not everyone likes what you write, what you say or what you think… but some people do. That’s my focus. On the people who like what you write… what I write.
The stories are written in British English… and translates perfectly for all!

How is Writing In Your Genre Different from Others?
I haven’t read another book about a bulimic who’s obsessed with music. I have read many stories about people with eating disorders, but most of those are “issue books” in which the eating disorder is the main focus of the story. In Leaving the Beach, bulimia is only one aspect of the character’s complex personality.

What Advice Would You Give Aspiring Writers?
Don’t give up if you’re feeling stuck. Instead, try to find a good writing group to help you, both with ideas, and with other issues you may be having, such as deciding on how to publish, etc. Joining a writing group was the best thing I ever did (in my writing career). I’m now a member of three different groups, and each one is helpful in a different way.

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I have a history with eating disorders–especially bulimia–although I’ve been healthy for almost twenty years now, and am the mother of two healthy teenagers. I’m also a huge music fan, as is my protagonist, Erin Reardon.

About the Author:
Mary Rowen is a Boston area mom with a wonderful family that allows her time to write almost every day. Leaving the Beach, although pure fiction, certainly draws on some personal experience. As the tagline states, it’s “a novel of obsession and music,” and rock music has always been a driving force in Rowen’s life. She was a functioning bulimic for over fifteen years, and really wanted to write a story with a bulimic main character. Eating disorders are so complicated–and dangerous–and she hopes Leaving the Beach might encourage people suffering from them to seek help.
